Mind you, I'd rather watch him play than talk.

He was a wanker. A very talented, amusing wanker.
I was good friends with Harry Thompson, who wrote his biography. Everyone loved and hated him in equal measure it seemed - there were many stories where he dominated social proceedings so much that it began to annoy people.
He was an absolute cunt to Dudley.

I was good friends with Harry Thompson, who wrote his biography. Great book, that. One of the best biogs I've ever read. And yeah, I can see he was a wanker. And even though I like a lot of what he did, I think he's ridiculously overrated by educated, white, middle-class middle-aged males (yes, us!).

Wanker? That's unfairly harsh for a guy a lot of people spoke warmly of. I hate that kind of judgemental shit. He was quite troubled for sure, but mavericks like him make the world a much better place.

I think later in life as the booze took hold (he didn't really start drinking heavily until he was in his thirties) he would dominate social gatherings, often being loud and unpleasant. Close friends commented on this. He really tested their relationships.
It's the same sort of thing you got with Moon. There are countless funny anecdotes but it's obvious they were fucking hard work much of the time.

I know I always harp on about this but I do honestly think his appearance on The Clive Anderson Show a year before he died was some of the funniest TV ever broadcast in this country. I'll never forget it - it was such a joy to see him back and on such great form again. A serious reminder of his talent.

His first wife said that he’d fuck off for the weekend, clearly shagging left, right and centre, come home clearly the worse for wear and she’d be furious. In 5 minutes she’d be crying with laughter. She said it was absolutely maddening. no reason why you can’t call someone a wanker even if they were a genius, which for a time he clearly was.

"i'll tell you one thing tony newley said to me"
"what was that?"
"who are you?"
the derek and clive stuff is pure genius. toby the tory's BCB signature 'arsehole all erect' signature always raises a smile.

The first Derek and Clive stuff IS genius. It is puerile toilet humour that never gets old and I still shed a tear when I hear the “worst job you ever had” sketch because the delivery is impeccable.
“So next time you read a travel brochure saying Go to Majorca on a bogey, forget it mate, because that is the end of the fucking world!”
Cook had a way of saying fuck and cunt that is probably unsurpassable.

Just the name "Eric Daley" makes me laugh!
