I don't wish to be rude but what the hell is the noise from A? I don't understand why stuff like this should be more revered than the likes of James Blunt or Ed Sheeran. B, obviously. Wow. First Barry Manilow invoked by "take your taps from my phone and leave my life alone" and now I'm supposed to picture cheerful Ed singing "when we're older, full of cancer"? I mean, I know nobody here listens to lyrics, but what's next? Randy Newman's "Rednecks" might as well be Kenny Rogers? No big difference between NWA and Andrae Crouch?

I think for most people the music comes first. And if the music's no good, then they're not going to care about the lyrics. That's different of course to not caring about lyrics full stop.

Also, it sounds to me like hatz had a predetermined idea of Ed Sheeran lyrics, rather than actually listening to them. I'd certainly argue that, cheerfulness aside, he's written better lyrics than on this track.

Ginger Ed's no stranger to bleak. A Team for an example: "White lips, pale face / Breathing in snowflakes / Burnt lungs, sour taste / Light's gone, day's end / Struggling to pay rent / Long nights, strange men"

This is a great tie. I knew A already but it’s only now it’s “showcased” here I realize what a good song it is. That bit when the piano has a senior moment reminds me of something by Van Dyke Parks, I think. And if there must be strings, then they should be strong, like these ones.
I’ve always found JD overrated. Doesn’t mean I don’t like them, though. There are many flashes of brilliance in this track. It’s very close, but just because it surprised me a little more, and also because it doesn’t deserve to be losing so badly,
A

Not to drive this into the ground, but honestly I've always found the "sounds like/might as well be" comparisons a bit ridiculous. I mean, everybody's dealing with the same notes, mostly the same instrumentation, the same musicians might be on hundreds of varied recordings, etc. - for me it's all about what's being sung and why's it being sung. I get that most people mostly care about music first and that can play into what a song "means" or how people hear it, but superficial musical resemblence (which, in the cases brought up here are not even true to my ears anyway, but I digress) falls very far down the list for me when comparing two things. Quality is another matter - Sheeran is better than Leonard Cohen, for example, if you're looking for what he does. My long-winded way of saying opinions are like arseholes, I guess, and of course I think I'm the sane one here. This time, anyway.
And just for the record, Nilsson was not my pick. But it easily could have been.

I think that was the basis of the criticism though. There's not much qualitative difference here from this Nilsson track and a Blunt/Sheeran ballad, and therefore why should it be held in different regard? The only other poster making comparisons was me, and that was to Scott Walker and Ultravox, which is nonsense, and which would've been way better, and could beat Joy Division.

If I were to compare that Nillson track to anything it would be to the sound of a beached whale.

I think I would've voted for B if they'd chosen the LP version because Barney's guitar sound just a tad too 'heavy metal' on this recording and kinda ruins it for me.
I've got lots of time for Harry Nilsson, and this is a lovely track but unfortunately it's a bit early in the day for me to truly appreciate it. I'll just have to imagine that I'm sitting at home, slightly buzzed, with it playing loudly on the stereo, instead of being at work, slightly dazed, and listening to it quietly on shitty computer speakers.
