If Chelsea were willing to get rid of him for £8 million it suggests that either Arsenal know something they don't know or that he is past his best and not the player he once was. What it tells you is Conte and Sarri rated him and Lampard doesn't. I'm sure there'll be a number of Chelsea fans questioning the wisdom of that decision after the performance of Zouma the other day. That is only significant if you regard Lampards opinion on football as having far more credibility than Conte or Sarri. Personally I have no reason to think that. I'm sure that at some point he will give an accomplished performance and at some point he will lose you 3 points. . Except the stats say different (see the article I linked). And there's always Brazil 1 Germany 7 to take into consideration when defending or criticising Luiz. Possibly the most jaw dropping performance by any international player at a World Cup... Oh he had a nightmare that day without doubt and I guess it's inevitable that such a high profile game will define him in some people's eyes. However Brazil were always an accident waiting to happen - as I told you on BCB before the tournament began, when you were predicting they would sweep all before them. However it was fundamentally a poor team performance that day. The worst mistake leading to a goal was made by Fernandinho, but I haven't noticed you arguing that Man City should drop him as a result. One game doesn't wipe out the number of successful sides and seasons he's been a vital part of.

He's better in a back 5 where he gets some extra security but he does have some real quality and as a dynamic centre half capable of bringing the ball forward and playing the kind of pass that would make many midfielders envious he has the ability to positively impact on a team. If he's used correctly and he has the right players around him. Yes he lacks concentration sometimes and when he's bad he's really quite bad (he lacks the consistency great defenders have) but for 8 million? Unless his legs have gone it could potentially be a bargain.

As much fun as it is to enjoy Man Utd's fall from grace, it's not as much fun when you decide to sit through their games. Proper lower-league stuff today between them and Southampton. When you think of how much money has been spent, and you don't get to see three passes strung together without the ball bouncing off someone's shin into touch.

G pretty quiet about Luiz after last weeks debacle.
Meanwhile West Ham seem to have signed, at last, a decent striker.

When you think of how much money has been spent that’s the thing, isn’t it? Hundreds of millions and nothing to show for it and a manager clearly out of his depth. It’s going to take years to turn that sinking ship around. Happy days.

The NLD was a terrific game. I thought Arsenal restored a lot of pride with that second half performance.

an interesting start to the season ahead of the international break. 3rd and 4th spots are up for grabs. spurs seem a bit stale and their squad a bit thin, while arsenal have defensive frailties which will hinder their challenge. man u and fat frank's chelsea will be lucky to finish in the top 6 from what i've seen so far. man u in particular, look broken. leicester, everton and West Ham all have first teams, which on paper look just as good or if not better and all played some quality football this weekend in their wins. wolves will get bogged down by their europa league campaign. their are some very weak teams in the league this year and i think they'll be quite a big difference between the top 10 and bottom 10, i really do.
