One of my favourite actors has just passed away aged 75. Hugely underrated for me, he brought a charismatic presence to most of his screen performances. He was best known for Bladerunner of course, and in particular that extraordinary death scene. However there is more to him than that and I particularly enjoyed him in Eureka, The Hitcher and Nighthawks ( he is great as a sociopathic terrorist). Best of all though was his turn in a now sadly rather forgotten film called The Legend of the Holy Drinker, his performance is tender, funny and soulful and I urge you to see it if you can find it.
RIP Rutger.

he was good in all that stuff. I still haven't seen "Hobo With a Shotgun" but I'll bet he's good in it. I used to drive across town to see "art movies" and knew him from those Verhoven movies he did. still, nothing prepared me for how touching he was in "Bladerunner". people on social media are using that scene to honor his memory. how perfect is that? that scene really lifts that movie and Rutger Hauer's passing. He was still a handsome fucker at 79. R.I.P.

I always thought he should have been a huge star but I'm guessing he didn't really want that.
I thought he was hugely charismatic and intense and, yes, underrated as an actor. I saw him most recently in Eureka and although I didn't like movie he was typically great. Plus he looked like some kind of aryan ubermensch. I mean that in a good way!

Really good actor who was usually better than the material he was doing...For me, he will always be Martin in Flesh and Blood. Too bad that movie failed so horribly at the box office. The roguish mercenary Martin could have become the heroic role he was always after, in future installments...Sadly, He and Verhoeven never worked together again after the chaotic production...A Success might have changed their minds...

I will. I've been meaning to buy the book for years but it's a very slim thing and it costs close to a tenner!
