I love Mel Brooks but he only manages greatness once in a blue moon. I'm not a huge fan of most of what he put out after High Anxiety. This clip does all it really needs to in the first half-minute or so, but that ridiculous song-and-dance thing shows him at his best. Reducing heavy themes to tap dances is always going to tickle me.
That's a pretty funny Seinfeld clip too, but it probably works better in the context of the full show.

A is absurdist humor at its best, and is also a great example of using humor to combat cruelty and injustice. Which is sort of Brooks in a nutshell. Though I agree with JC that it goes on well after it's made its point.
B is amusing, but it's more of a set up to a premise than an actual comedy bit. It's a lot less laught-out-loud funny.

I rarely find that kind of musical number funny, although I can appreciate it's clever. I enjoyed B, a great George moment and it made me chuckle, especially the aggressive way he shut Jerry down.

nothing there. not even a grin. ABSTAIN As blinkered in the sense of humour department as you are in the music one, eh skopey? A shame. This a good start. I have a soft spot for well-written comedic dance numbers; they can be so wonderfully ludicrous when done right. A has a lot I like, but B is one of those Seinfeld moments that is almost perfect. You do need to understand the show, and the genius of the George character - and to a lesser extent Jerry's too - to really GET how perfect that situation is, but I do love the show's high points and this is one of them. In college, I actually took a Mel Brooks and Woody Allen film summer school class where we compared and contrasted the two comedians. And I got college credit for it for writing one paper. We watched every one of their movies. This is the kind of thing where Brooks' screwball parodies of musicals worked perfectly.
Every night at 10 pm, they show repeats of Seinfeld and I usually watch both episodes. Last night, they showed the pilot episode and it always strikes me how much Jason Alexander was doing his version of Woody Allen in that. The other episode I watched was Fatigues, which has much funnier scenes than this episode.

I never thought much of Mel Brooks, lots of mugging at the camera and beating you over the head with the obvious. I seem to be the only person in the world who doesn't think the farting scene in Blazing Saddles is funny. Jackie Mason's bit was the best so far, but there's not much clever or witty here. Two Ronnies on a bigger budget, and less drag.
I never liked Seinfeld. It's Friends for Guardian readers, and not as good. This clip shows a bit of desperation to me, the way Jerry is trying to exaggerate the therapist thing for comic effect, but there's nothing there, there's nothing funny underlying it. And the punchline is timed well, but weak.
