I just watched the first episode of season 4 and I thought it was terrific.
I think it's been TWO YEARS since the last new episode aired. I'll be honest - I thought it was all over.
Dan Harmon was very publicly accused of sexual harassment and then a funny thing happened. He apologized to the woman in an equally public way & she forgave him. Adult Swim announced a whopping 70 new episodes would be produced. well, I doubt I'll get tired of it before they reach that number.
the fact that it's lasted as long as it has is pretty amazing. The show sort of takes the "Marty McFly/Doc Brown" relationship from "Back to the Future" and gives it to a suburban teen and his maternal grandfather. the family is insanely dysfuntional. Rick - the grandfather is a brilliant scientist who routinely travels from one universe to the next. He is also a curmudgeon and something of a reprobate. over the course of three seasons his relationship with Morty seems mostly based on the fact that Morty pretty much does what he says.
like many "adult" cartoons "Rick & Morty" deals very deliberately in bizarre situations and questionable taste. What really sets it apart for me is the truly mind-numbing science fiction situations they come up with. clearly the writers have a lot of LEM & Kurt Vonnegut under the belt. the combination of jaw dropping sci-fi situations and dick jokes is a real winner as far as I'm concerned.
season four premiere episode breaks the fourth wall a lot. I guess this is sort of a tradition. If you start watching it - think Marvel movies becuase there is usually a VERY funny or disturbing scene after the end credits.
people are commenting that it seems a little more politically aware - I'm not sure I agree. I think this has always been an aspect of the show. only 69 episodes left to go!
