Big Star - worthy of all the hype and praise. Great band with some great guitar sounds too
Jonathan Richman - the Modern Lovers stuff is golden. Really wonderful. Lots of great solo stuff too if a bit patchy.
Tim Buckley - he is underrated these days? A real talent. Love that jazz-folk melange

Big Star - beautiful surface, enormous depth. The Sonics - great sound, energy, spirit. Cocteau Twins - what can I say? I love this shit.

Big Star - nothing to add Tangerine Dream - I have about 10 records from them that I never get tired of listening to Jonathan Richman - well ... you just can't not love him.

Jandek - He's got that real intimate sound thing on his best work, proper slightly-odd loner in a bedroom poetry and 'unconventional' guitar plucking. The way he pings the plectrum off those top strings strikes cold fear into my soul.
Arthur Russell's ambient cello-fuzzery pop stylings are a thing of deep beauty, and his disco stuff is cool, too.
Young Marble Giants did minimal bedsit electo pop with a swagger. You could argue Suicide deserve the third slot because YMG only recorded one album, but then you could argue that Suicide only recorded one album, they just released it more often.

I went for Arthur Russell, The Cocteaus and (best of all) Tim Buckley. I'll no doubt be back to say why.

I voted for Big Star, Arthur Russell, and Jonathan Richman, but I love a LOT of the acts listed here, and pretty much every one has put out at least some stuff I like a great deal.

I don't know any Arthur Russell....what would you recommend? That depends on whether you want his dance-oriented stuff, or the moodier cello excursions. Soul Jazz Records put out a pretty good career-spanning primer on him a few years back:

Sonics Replacements Jonathan Richman
Go Betweens just missed the cut.

Jonathan and the Go-Betweens are shoo-ins: third was a toss-up between Suicide and YMG, and the Welsh won. Apart from those four, and sometimes the Cocteaus, not fussed about any of the rest

I could only come up with 2 that I cared about - Sonics & Big Star. There are a few I don’t know very well.

Big Star - worthy of all the hype and praise.
They tend to be a little overrated by music fans imo. Their problem is they're closer to Tom Petty than The Velvet Underground.
