I'm on BOMP! Records' e-mail list. More often than not I delete their e-mails so that I'm not tempted to buy anything, but once in a while I don't. Like today. One of the New Items mentioned in today's e-mail was "STOOGES 1974 REHEARSALS - ARCHIVAL GREG SHAW CASSETTE". I thought, well, that's intriguing - it's probably stuff that's long since come out on CD and/or vinyl, and the cassette has probably already sold, but let's see what else they've put up...That cassette had sold, as had some others from the same stash - DMZ demos, Kim Fowley demos... But this one remained: "MYSTERY TREND/RED CRAYOLA 7/67 AND CROME SYCUS 7/67 - ARCHIVAL GREG SHAW CASSETTE"The description: "We found a handful of cassettes in our storage area that were recorded and owned by the late, great GREG SHAW. Each cassette has a label either typed or handwritten by Greg himself, most of them from the 80s. These were tapes he used to trade with other collectors and for his own listening enjoyment. DON'T BE ALL ASKING ME WHAT’S ON THEM, these are being released because they are rather historical, not for their specific content. SOLD AS IS!"
Okay. I'm intrigued by The Mystery Trend and Crome Syrcus, but I'm pretty downright obsessed with The Red Crayola, so I took a $30 gamble. And was grateful for the opportunity. After I ordered it it occurred to me that the Crayola material is probably the improvs later released on Live 1967 (recorded in Shaw's home state of California)... although that was in 6/67 and this says 7/67. But we'll see.

WHOA, that's insanely cool.
I've been listening to the Red Crayola quite a bit lately. They were really a singular band, without many obvious antecedents (or even that many descendents). As they're a Houston-based band, the station where I DJ has a TON of their stuff - probably 30 or more cds worth, and a decent vinyl collection as well. I'd be really curious to hear what's on this one.

The thought of ANY radio station anywhere in the world having even half that much Red Crayola on hand is somewhat mindboggling to me. It's a left-end-of-the-dial non-commercial college station, with a pretty limited listenership. The main rule is that we aren't supposed to play anything that any other station in the area might play. Red Crayola is pretty much right in the station's wheelhouse.
