New idea for a thread or more exactly thread series. Post an album that you think is interesting that can be discussed ( I'd like to keep the threads separate). Just a couple of provisos - try and post something a bit off the beaten track that might be new to quite a few and make sure there's a link for others to listen.
I've been getting into Buffy Saint Marie's 'Illuminations' recently. This album apparently met with incomprehension on its 1969 release. This is not surprising, it has a confrontational stridency and ceates a very dark atmosphere which is not very commercial. At times her voice is fed through some kind of electronic modulator to create this quivery effect. It probably the most witchety album I've heard, it feels as if there's something powerful and incantory going on. The album is also sequenced to disrupt and throw you between these extreme emotional states the songs occupy. Highlights include the hypnotic incantation of "God is Alive, Magic is Afoot" (first track), the slightly sinister sensuality of "Guess Who I Saw in Paris" and the desolate, starkly beautiful landscape of "Poppies" (last track).
Give it a listen and tell me what you think!

I'll have a listen later on when I'm not at work, but I'm curious about the "quivery effect" on her voice. I don't know how familiar you are with her, but her voice has always been very tremulous.

I haven't heard it in years... I remember being pretty excited by it when I first heard it, but "God is Alive, Magic is Afoot" is the only track that really stayed with me. I might give it another go.

Have you heard "Paix" by Catherine Ribeiro & Alpes, G? I think it might be right up your alley.
Oh, and I see what you mean about the vocal effect.

Did anyone bother listening to this? Post negative comments if you want, it's better than silence!

I'm still building up to it, steeling myself for the impact of the full Weetabix. I will get to it though.

I enjoyed it without falling in love at first listen, which is still a good sign as musically it feels like a bit of a sleeper, something that appealed and will make me come back to it. Her very strong vibrato can be a little overpowering, much like Robbie Basho, but the whole album has a massive range of sounds so it's just another element of that. 'Adam' for example sounds both futuristic and traditional is certain ways, a fascinating mix.

Yeah, ok, that's an odd album that I would expectwould be all kinds of anti-G kryptonite. There are aspects I love, "Adam", as fange points out is a wonderful track, pastoral, jazzy, experimental, but still kinda traditional in the vocal. That fuzzy bass with the breakbeat, it's practically Leftfield 30 years earlier. And I never thought I would write a positive sentence including the words Adam and fange. The folky moments are really well done, too, I just wish she coulda cut back on that vibrato a touch. Or even a helluva lot.

I gave it a listen, and enjoyed it, but it hasn't fully hooked me yet. I think with a few more listens, it will grow on me.
