Rayge, not being a great traveller, I don't think realises how very much easier it is to drag a suitcase behind you than try to control it in front of you Well exactly - they have one handle that you hold so the natural way is to hold them at the side and drag them rather than trying to push them around like a vacuum cleaner or something!

I've learned from the experts, baggage workers at airports. So I walk a bit, fling the suitcase down the street, walk a bit, fling the suitcase down the street, until I arrive at my destination.

Is Coan sorry he started this thread yet? He should have put his vitriol in a rucksack and thrown it in a lake without putting it out there for everyone.

I use a backpack damn near everyday. I wondered why you brought one to the pub the other night. But I've since realised that you must have to bring supplies of food, water and medicine with you wherever you go, given that you subsequently got on the wrong bus and got lost trying to find your mate's house. In the city where you've lived for several years.

I've used one of these old Bundeswehr ones for years as a day rucksack when I'm walking in the hills. Very tough and durable, and I like the classic old-fashioned look of it. The plastic clips aside, it's like something Patrick Leigh Fermor would have used to carry his gear in while walking across Europe and down to the Balkans in the 1930s.

One thing I've learned from being on message boards for the best (?) part of 20 years is that people will often take the contrary stance on a thread. If I'd have started this thread with a post like 'rucksacks are really useful, aren't they? I've only just realised', then it's pretty much guaranteed people would have chimed in with complaints. Always the way. It's psychology.

So Coan actually LOVES rucksacks!
He's so devious and tricksy.

What's your favourite colour rucksack, Coan?
External water bottle attachments - yes or no?
