One revelatory album and several good but flawed ones (and a couple of bold experiments that fall flat but at least are bold) and, when looked at seriously, one of the best singles runs of the 70s (easily better than any other ex-Beatle - yes, I said it) vs. A mish-mosh of everything from inspired but flawed to "what the hell was he thinking?" with a grand total of one big hit (great in its own way but mostly in a "I can't believe they played that on the radio" way. Yeah, it's Lennon, pretty easily. Reed has no answer for POB. Even his best work is, at best, 75% his. (The rest Bowie's, or Ezrin's, Or Quine's.) I wouldn't have thought the undisputed leader of the Velvets would need a partner more than the guy whose entire image is based on a yin/yang relationship with a competitor/collaborator, but as I look at it, those are the facts. That makes a lot of sense but I can't agree. The funny thing with that first paragraph is, allowing for a tiny amount of editing (removing references to singles runs and the big hit), the first sentence seems to more accurately describe Reed whereas the last part of the paragraph could easily describe Lennon.

Quaco once wrote a pretty spirited defense of WitNotW - It didn't make me love it, but he made a good case. Dated/of the time/whatever else you want to say about them, it's pretty much unprecedented that someone at that level would be that direct and contentious, and infuse it with so much pop smarts to boot. Certainly Bowie or Neil or Elton (or whoever else we'd put at the top level that I think Lennon shares) don't manage it. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. It's undoubtedly brave, but there are no "pop smarts" there at all. Musically it's a dog of a record.

It's undoubtedly brave, but there are no "pop smarts" there at all. Musically it's a dog of a record. It isn’t a dog. All Lennon records of that era just have a sound. That strange 70s/50s vibe of his was just completely unique and dripping with sonic pixie dust. On top of that, there’s a really challenging lyric and Lennon’s great delivery. Then there are the strings at the end. Whatever else one may complain about, it’s a good record. But yeah - it is also a bad single, because at the end of the day... it just doesn’t have much of a hook. It isn’t a memorable tune. It sounds like an album track. But that’s pretty much the only bad single in a pretty incredible run: Give Peace a Chance Cold Turkey Instant Karma Mother Power to the People Imagine Happy Xmas (War Is Over) Woman is... Mind Games Whatever Gets You Through the Night #9 Dream Stand By Me (Just Like)Starting Over Woman Watching The Wheels Pretty great by any standards.

Each could be boiled down to a nice dbl lp or single cd.

I'd go for different selections, but I wouldn't argue that it's doable.
Easier for Lennon, though - and that's in less time. And with a lot more hits.

I'd struggle to come up with 10 great Lennon solo tracks I've got to say, but I'm interested to see what you both would pick, although the high rating of "Woman is..." has me a bit worried!

although the high rating of "Woman is..." has me a bit worried! High rating by whom? Unless I missed something none of us really like it!
