Sadly this is the last of the rounds, but there will be a final featuring the top two from each group. AMissing Scientists – Big City Bright Lights BDiamanda Galas - Pardon Me I've Got Someone To Kill I'm getting an error message with the above video. Don't know if it's just me, but here's another link just in case.

Since I prefer that killers have a genteel quality about them...

Lordy, not off to a good start this round.
I almost want to give it to A for not taking itself that seriously, but I think instead I'll give it to B for being a cross between Judy Henske and Daniel Johnston vocally.

B I like DG when she seems to be straddling her demons rather than poking them with her spurs.

Ooh, I liked that first one. Reminded me a wee bit of BAD with the co-opted reggae rhythms and the nicotine vocal - but with one major difference (wait for it) -
this lot had made an effort. Nice. And again, I've no point of reference for it at all (Australia 1990? UK 1984?) which sort of helps.
I can't be arsed with Diamanda Galas and honestly I've tried. It's good that these sorts of artists exist, I suppose, 'cos it's testament to the idea of a tolerant society, and that anything no matter how bad can get lifted into a place where it's on public view. But no, this is cobblers.

A sounded like one of The Clash's more inept experiments that ended up on side four of Sandinesta. Pretty terrible vocals and all a bit confused, but not entirely dislikable. I first heard Diamanda Galas when I was in a car with Jo from The Breeders, but that's another story. It's a little too strident and full on for me, but it does seem fully realised in way that A isn't.

I did not derive any form of enjoyment from either of those.
I'll give it to A only because it reminds me of some of the bedroom multi-track tunes that my friends and I were making in the 80's.
I've also got a funny story about driving around with Jo from the Breeders, but I'll need you all to sign a non-disclosure agreement before I tell it.

A's like some early Devo demo where they were trying out a different vocalist, or perhaps Tuxedomoon after having their drinks spiked with E. It's not particularly good, but it's an interesting oddity, and for this cup a good outside interest pick. Just about manages to keep its quirk under control.
And I really love this song, I thought Diamanda would be a good artist to throw a round with, but then decided to pick something fun rather than earnest or shrieky. A brilliant, unique artist (and how good is her piano-work, btw?), having a hugeamount of fun with a Johnny Paycheck song. One of my favourite songs from the last few years.
Vote A, anyway, for not picking an obvious name.

If the production was a bit tighter, the first track might have taken this..Going with the weirdness of the second..Vote B

I was in an Uber recently with Galas and Jo from the Breeders, and both told me that i should listen to more Johnny Paycheck as it's been a while and to vote A.

I would have preferred to be in a car with Kim Deal.
Anyway, not sure if I love or hate B, probably both simultaneously. And I don't feel like listening again to decide, unless Kim would ask me. But that's unlikely to happen, so

I bought this when it came out on the basis of a rather enigmatic review in the NME, quite liked it, then filed it away fter a few plays. It was only when I saw that it was going for a few quid more than I expected on discogs that I discovered it was by a kind of post punk supergroup, with Dan Treacy of the TVPs backed by a Silicon Teen or two on synth and produced by Mute boss Dan Miller, making it a perfect cup pick as far as I was concerned. I still liked it, and thought it was a far better take on popping up reggae than the Clash or any other punks had managed.
I don't have much by Diamanda Galas, mainly her Plague Mass, I think, and what I have I seldom play - but whenever I do, she blows me away. I haven't heard this before, and indeed it's much poppier than the material I have, with more of her extraordinary piano, which is fine by me, and less screaming and howling, which is a shame, as her voice in the upper registers is one of the most chillingly expressive things I've ever heard issue from a (presumably) human larynx.
As DF has done the decent thing above, I can only chivalrously reciprocate.
