A put a name to the photo quiz, but with a bit of a difference. Twenty pictures of moderately well-known (to me at any rate) – people who are they? I'm going to lock the thread until the weekend so everyone who wants to can have a go - PLEASE PM ME WITH ANY ANSWERS. Then I'll open it up and give clues about any not got. Eleven or twelve Americans, couple of Brits, three mass murderers, three 'musicians', three writers, three visual artists

Um, well that didn't go as swimmingly as I hoped, so here's what we got so far: Sneelock got the 'easy one' 20 Raymond ChandlerCharlie went for 6. Les Paul 7. Timi Yuro 8. Ricardo Montalban 11. Bill Burroughs and 16. Magritte (of course), so two out of five. G went for 'I think 9 is Tommy Farr. 19 is Robert Crumb probably.' None out of two. dayodead went for #17- John Wesley Hardin: Old west outlaw and folk icon, #11- Hitler, #10- Rocky Marciano (?) 3/3 But the biggest winner was skope 6-les paul 7-alma cogan 10-rocky marciano 11-hitler 14-bergman 16-magritte - wouldn't have known without the prop. i've seen the 17 photo before. a wild west character but can't remember his name. 20 is an american writer. i initially thought capote, but it's not him. i thought 1 was bobby, cilla black's husband, but it's not. so that's six Most entertaining list, though, was from fonz, who had a bash at most of them, with mixed results 1 hughie green 3 Richard Speck 4 Webern 6 Lester Polfus (Les Paul) 7 Cher 9 buffalo Bill 10 jack dempsey 13 Charles Atlas 16 Mr Topsy Turvy 17 billy the kid, 18 jack duckworth So that leaves the following 11, with clues 1 recently much discussed in a music thread 2 more than 100 years dead (allegedly), they wrote songs about him Joe hill, got by DF 4 An Austrian with a feline connection Erwin Schrodinger, got by dayodead 5 American Black Mountain poet that I actually met and hung out with. Self indugence Ed Dorn, got by dayodead
8 is best known for not being famous and associated by name only with... 9 a 19th century writer and industrialist 12 is famous for painting absences Edward Hopper, got by LJO 13 took his ring name from a Nat King Cole song 'Nature Boy' Buddy Rogers, heavyweight wrestling champ, got by dayodead
15 is a Russian briefly famous in the 1960s 18 is my favourite photographer (the setting is definitely a clue) O Winston Link, got by fonz 19 is the publicity-shy creator of a great comic strip Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin & Hobbes, got by LJO

(Looks like Creeley as well, but he was often pictured with hats on..) #4-Erwin Schrödinger...HA..Great clue... #13-Ric Flair..Another good clue..(Thought Charles Atlas earlier..) Four and five are spot on, but number 13 is from an earlier incarnation of 'Nature Boy', world champ when I was into wresting around the turn of the 1960s

He’s a favourite of mine, too, since I saw a pic in one of the Sunday magazines, of some kids playing in a river, with a train whizzing past on a bridge, in the middle of the night. The lighting was immaculate. A great picture. I dug around a bit more, and found that trains figure heavily in his work! To be honest, in your picture I thought the big ‘thing’ behind the subjects might have been an aeroplane fuselage or something. Maybe something to do with Hiroshima. Very pleasantly surprised to see a picture of Jack Duckworth!
