B3 ("He grew up on the sidewalk, he grew up running free") is the Shangri-Las, "Out in the Street."

B7 ("Something warm running in my eyes / but I still found my baby somehow that night") is "Last Kiss" by... J. Frank Wilson? J. Frank something or other?

B14 ("The conversation sparkles / As their wits are dipped in wine") is, I THINK, "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum.

A10 ("Don't be too quick to pity me / Don't salve my heart with sympathy") is "Permanently Lonely" by Willie Nelson!

A10 ("Don't be too quick to pity me / Don't salve my heart with sympathy") is "Permanently Lonely" by Willie Nelson! Yep! He wrote it, but the version I know is Timi Yuro's from her album of Country Standards, 'Make the World Go Away. Jeez she could sell a ballad with impeccable phrasing, as well as belt out soul numbers. As on most of her albums, you have to kind of sideline the saccharine and of-their-time (early 1960s) arrangements, but by the Krint, she could make a dull song interesting and a great one like this sublime. Must do a hagiography on her one day

It’s a tad embarrassing to admit that I know that this -
7 I read in the papers that there were robbers / With flashlights that shine in the dark
- is from How Much Is That Doggy In The Window.
I feel some redemption in that I don’t remember who actually had the hit.

The version I had in mind isn't quite so cheesy... ...allegedly
