Where the bass isn’t a great solo instrument, we are left with the compositions and the group dynamic, which are good, and sometimes excellent.
I don’t like the yelps and scatting. Sounds like he’s having too much fun. Jazz is a serious business. I want earnest performers.

I saw the Mingus Big Band in a small club, absolutely blistering. Well worth seeing if you get a chance.

I bought (maybe two or three days ago) The Jazz Experiments Of Charles Mingus. It's the only Mingus I own, and...yes, a revelation! I was blown away by it.
And then again, by the tracks posted on this thread (especially those from Ah Um). He's like...Mancini or something. And I say this as a compliment of the highest order. These really seductive melodies and harmonies and sounds.

I'm still waiting to get into him..dunno why, I don't find him as accessible as everyone else. I do love 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' though.

I don't think he's particularly accessible. A lot of what I've heard sounds like what you'd get if you were stuck in the middle of heavy traffic (around 3 minutes in, here).
but it's really gripping and fierce and joyous all at the same time.

Cheers for saying what the appeal is. I do have that album actually, I probably bought it a good twenty years ago. It's all a bit woozy for me, it doesn't swing much, but i can kind of see how it might appeal to Beefheart fans (not meant as a putdown!)

I think that was the first Mingus album I bought, inspired by Lester Bangs' love of it. It made me investigate further, and I'm glad I did, but I don't play it so much these days. I love that he got his psychoanalyst to write the liner notes!

If I’m playing jazz in the car, when there’s a bass solo it’s almost as if the sound has dropped out altogether.
It’s a struggle to hear it.
Things changed when things went electric.
