I’d like to live in the one that has all the wires coming through the window. I bet it smells like burnt plastic and cat shit in that one!

I don't have the patience to read through this entire thread at the moment, but I would like to give a shout to the University of Auburn's Rural Studio: ruralstudio.org/"Rural Studio philosophy suggests that everyone, both rich and poor, deserves the benefit of good design. The students work within our community to clarify problems, define solutions, design, fundraise, and, ultimately, build remarkable projects. Our research addresses rural communities holistically: from houses to infrastructure and resources, always mindful of the connectedness of the many facets of rural life." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rural_StudioHere's the founder of the program Sam Mockbee, a bit of a hero of mine:

Building my own home before I die is a goal. A vastly scaled down version of this house about 20min from me is what I'm aiming for: Nequette Architecture & Design: nequette.com/

It's beautiful! Art Deco/Modernist. Newhaven. And it's still there. Just not quite as....

Sometimes it seems like you've been parachuted in from a building site or something, Markus

Sounds like a health and safety nightmare. Parachuting on a building site? Naw, you're grand.
