I used to love seeing these ads in the back of my cousin's comics the fact that I never actually got my hands on ANY of it was probably a good thing - let the dream live in the head! Was great to be young and not cynical, eh? Did anyone get hold of any of these? Any practical jokes you used that actually worked?

How the hell does that 'hot seat' work? maybe the same way as those hand warmers where applying pressure causes a chemical reaction?
And yes, I loved reading them, but never forked out for them, any more than I ever bought anything in a joke shop.At least, I don't think I did...

Yes! And X-ray specs. Look at women through their clothes!
Those American comics, of which I read a lot, were rendered so much more exotic by the ads they carried.
Twinkies and other edible garbage were the other crazy things I daydreamed about, though that’s all a bit of a cliche.
And Space Monkeys

I wanted to get some of those "stink bomb" thingies that you could insert into the end of an unsuspecting victim's cigarette to see if I could get my grandma to stop smoking. I thought for sure it would work, but I never did try.
And a 6 foot long working submarine for a couple of bucks??! I mean, c'mon! I WANT one now!!

You learn pretty quickly when doing any sort of renovation/building work that requires fibreglass or "rockwool" insulation to wear long sleeves and gloves when handling the stuff. I can imagine your dad's anger!

I love the art in those ads, too. They're just quick sketches but they're kind of funny and cute.

I hate to break it to you guys. I know you'll find this hard to believe but it's my sad duty to inform you that the people who sold those products were NOT on the up and up. of those pictured, I got a few. only the whoppee cushion seemed to do what it said it would. there was no joy to be had in the "joy buzzer" the only shocking thing about it was how noisy and cumbersome it was. you wound it up and it would buzz when it was pressed - sort of like a friction gun but smaller, cheaper and dumber. "throw your voice" was a complete wash out. you could cut your mouth on those if you weren't careful. I never DID cut my mouth but I never threw my voice either. not pictured are other RIP-OFFS I spent my hard earned pop bottle money on. notably "the hypno coin" which was supposed to make people do your bidding. the X-Ray Spex. not only could you NOT see through women's clothes you couldn't see jack shit they made everything look all shadowy. by far my favorite of these I didn't get myself. my comic book pal next door neighbor sent one American Dollar for a 100% guaranteed Fly killer. he received two small pieces of balsa wood - one piece had printed on it "place fly here" he had to admit it would probably work but he would have rather had his dollar back. I love those stupid ads. OH! everybody got "sea monkeys" those fuckers were like bugs in yeast or something. totally disgusting. NOT a nuclear family at all. it was all too much fun to be outraged, I guess.

I've long had a hunch that the person who first said that spent money on comic book ads.

Every Christmas I used to pack my kids Christmas stockings with practical joke gizmos like these... fake poo on the floor by the loo at my annual New Years Eve parties used to go down well, as well as the shocking hand buzzers and fake flies in ice cubes which they used to surreptitiously drop into people's drinks. They also used to delight in smoking fake cigarettes, aged about 8yrs old, standing on the street corner to shock the elderly as they walked by. They also loved putting fart cushions under dining table seat pillows at relatives houses, especially if they were very elderly and posh (on my husbands side of the family). My husband also used to make bombs in the garden for them but that's another story. I was a GREAT mum
