Also: started season 2 of Big Little Lies. Meryl Streep is unsettlingly creepy as Marie-Louise.

I watched one episode of Gentleman Jack, but it didn't grab me.
Costume dramas are really only my thing if there are soldiers, swords and muskets involved, but also it just seemed like someone in the BBC ideas department had the high concept idea of grafting a few 'edgy' tropes from Fleabag on to a standard Sunday evening easy-watching series.

Just found the new Tales of the City. It's not quite what it was and is more,er, graphic, but I'm really enjoying being back at Barbary Lane.

Is it an all new cast based on the first six books, or have they brought back Olympia Dukakis et al to run through Armistead Maupin's reboot of the series in novel form 30 years on?

It's on Netflix. Olympia, Laura, Gabrielle and thingy Gross all present and correct. Not sure if it's the same Mouse but he's great.

It's a new story but I've read the most recent books and this isn't really following them.

Thanks a lot, Carol. I'm not sure if we have Netflix at the moment, but next time we get it I'll check that out.

It is based on a real historical figure though, so the sexual politics has some parallel to real events.

Just watched the first episode of Clooney's adaptation of Catch-22. It had the mark of quality - beautifully filmed, strong cast etc. but didn't really work for me. The approach they took was to tone down the book into a more naturalistic drama, but then you lose the book's glorious absurdity. I think it would be better served amped up rather than toned down, run with the book's craziness and revel in its extremes. Certainly much of the humour was lost. Still I'll continue with it.. no else watch this btw?

I fancied it initially but the trailers didn't convince me at all. Like you, the tone just didn't seem right to me but I might get round to it. I rarely watch shows in real time.
Was the 2nd ep an improvement?

I was right about Catch-22, a real missed opportunity. Taking the humour out is not the way to go!

In other news I really enjoyed the Katie Puckric docs on yacht rock. I have a soft spot for some of those sounds and I liked the genuine love she had for a lot of it. Worth a watch.
