I watched over a minute of that before realizing the guy is talking another language.

I like the one where Bowie is trying to sleep off a hangover on the sofa. Him and Angie get in a fight. groceries go everywhere. it's a classic.

Nobody is praising some forgettable work post the Golden years as evidence of Bowie' genius. But when the likes of Willie Nelson or some of the others on this thread (Tom Verlaine?) have been noted as being comparable then I think the goggles are on the other head. That may be, but G has tried to convince me of the greatness of Earthling. I mean, seriously! And again (and again and again and again) songcraft is a very specific thing. Which is where I think G's goggles are at their most obvious. Plain and simple, Tom Verlaine has roughly the same number of songs that move me greatly as Bowie does. The difference is I'm not denying I'm wearing Verlaine goggles. I haven't (and wouldn't) tried to sell his 'cultural importance.' But I'm not budging on the song thing. Where is this huge number of (good) Bowie songs that are ingrained in the memory of the common man? "Heroes" and maybe "Space Oddity" at a push? It's nothing to be ashamed of. Just embrace it, ffs! Ashes to Ashes, Changes, Lets Dance, Young Americans, Modern Love, Rebel Rebel, all songs that made a big impact on even casual music fans, hatzy. These are the kinds of songs that i would argue are indeed ingrained in the memory of our larger non-music fanatic world.
