Anybody a podcast listener? Any recommendations?
I heard the word bandied about for a few years and it just went over my head until I was recommended a few on Spotify and decided to dive in. I don't drive, so my commute to work involves a bus journey and a bit of a walk. My ears are knackered so I can't listen to music on headphones any more, but speech is fine (although some of the ones I listen to slip in snippets of music, which I can tolerate for a short time).
My absolute favourite and one which I get excited about when a new episode appears is 'Chart Music', in which a sweary, middle aged bloke from Nottingham called Al Needham dissects a vintage episode of 'Top of the Pops', with a couple of ex Melody Maker writers, from a pool which includes David Stubbs, Simon Price, Neil Kulkarni, Taylor Parkes and Sarah Bee (don't remember Sarah, she's after my time as a MM reader, but they're all great in their own ways.) The episodes can sometimes be up to 6 hours long and if you're not a Patreon subscriber, they tend to get split up into about 4 episodes. They have a long preamble, looking at the TV, culture, current affairs etc of the year in question, before they get stuck in to the TOTP episode.
If you give it a try and enjoy it, there's a huge backlog and within a short time, you'll become familiar with the likes of the 'pigwanker general' (Simon Bates), Comrade Shakey, B.A Cunterson and er..'Bummerdog'
'Nothing is Real' -The foremost Beatles Podcast, presented by the 'Beatle brains of Ireland', Jason and Steven, who are affable, knowledgeable and passionate. They tackle specific events or records on each show and it's very slick and professional.
'That Record Got Me High' -A couple of American guys who usually have a guest, sometimes a 'famous' one and they dissect random albums, while playing excerpts from each track. I've recently enjoyed episodes on 'You're Living All Over Me', 'Psychocandy' and 'Rain Dogs'
'Winter Of Discontent' -A forensic breakdown of the 'Get Back' sessions lots of detail and diversions up different alleys, to elaborate on covers the fabs were doing or just events in their lives and the wider world of January 1969.
Those are the ones that immediately come to mind. I listen to quite a few others, but I've gotta go to work now...

Thought I'd bump this thread, since, judging by the lack of response to it, none of you bloody GRANDADS (big winky smile) seem to know what podcasts are.. Just been listening to Louis Theroux's one, featuring an interview with Nick Cave. open.spotify.com/episode/4OwNk3CSw70KeufuG6O41N?si=3f6373050ce94a34You forget how good Theroux is at disarming people and he gets the best out of Cave, whose recent interviews have been a bit too ponderous, which may be just down to the interviewer. He responds well to Theroux and there's a warmth and irreverence to their chat.

I thought they were finally slowing down and very slowly dying out.

Not in my experience, although I was late to them.
There's about 20 that I listen to regularly and others crop up all the time
It's hard to keep up.

Well, I don't drive, so my commute is a bus ride and a walk of about a mile.
Or a 3 mile walk if I can be arsed.
I also listen to one when drifting off to sleep or if I wake up early and don't need to get up straight away.

The top two Beatles podcasts (actually, the only two I really enjoy - and ranked in the order I discovered and enjoy them) are both female hosted. And by (I believe) younger hosts than the sort of crusty old Beatleverse out there, which means that there's a great deal less received wisdom and more critical analysis.
1. One Sweet Dream - This is the business. The crux of this is John and Paul's relationship, and its disintegration in the later years of the band. There's a lot of branching out FROM there, but...that's the sort of home base. This was the first podcast I ever bothered to listen to, and...I'm still listening (two years later).
2. Another Kind of Mind - Similar, but...just dissimilar enough to merit its own bandwidth.
The other one I dig is
Better Call Saul Insider Podcast
It helps to be into BCS, obviously. But...I'm hooked, and...obviously, this is going to end for me at some point (I'm in Season 5 at the moment). Peter, Vince, tons of crew, actors, directors, writers, production people. A different cast every week, and it really manages to thread the needle between compelling insight and not telling the viewer what to think.

They're both great on the psychology of the John/Paul dynamic, particularly the break up.

An issue that I do have - as someone who has lost and is losing hearing due to a lifetime of bad habits - is that OFTEN on a podcast, the difference in perceptible volume between the loudest person and the quietest person is IMMENSE. So much so that I find myself yanking the volume up and down in the car just so I can get all of the dialogue without losing TOO much of my remaining hearing. I don't know that there's an easy, universal fix for this (people have different mic techniques, especially guests, and people's voices just do different things - including a subconscious emphasis on frequencies that need emphasis, and a trimming of those that don't), but...I live in hope.
Another issue...
Now, I don't say this to delegitimize any of the best shit, but...you know, there's simply no way to diplomatically say that not everyone needs a megaphone. It's real "typical old guy shit" for me to be saying, but...I felt much the same way once "the blogosphere" and social media were in their infancy. If you knew someone who was a blowhard in real life, they probably weren't going to be less so with megaphone access. And here we are. It's easy enough to tune out, but...the last time I had something to hawk (maybe two years ago) and there was a publicist duly setting up the promotional opportunities, I guess this was when I learned that the pods were now the bulk of the "rounds". And there were a million of them, and they were everywhere, and...oh, boy - NOT all created equal. Some were pretty cool, but...demographically, "guys who sound like they really like hearing themselves talk" are peas in a pod. It's a type.

I listen to a lot of podcasts. Too many to mention. A bunch of music and movie ones. A few political ones. Some really wonky ones on social science, economics, history, and philosophy. A few on religion and spirituality. Also a bunch of weird, indescribable ones. I bounce around a lot.

There have been a few that have seemed promising but then I've had to give up on them for similar reasons. Sometimes it's a technical thing, like an imbalance in the volume. Sometimes it can be the dreaded 'rising intonation ' that just starts to put my teeth on edge. Sometimes you'll get a bunch of young guys all laughing and talking loudly at the same time, without realising that it makes the whole thing virtually unlistenable.

People often recommend podcasts to me but I can't do them. I think it's because I like to see things, above all. I'll watch documentaries, listen to people who are sitting in front of me for ages, and actually listen to 'podcasts' that have a visual element - even if it's just the faces of the people talking (Rob Brydon's series on YT is a good example of this). But this business of plugging in to a disembodied voice or a number of voices - not for me.
