Shabaka Hutchings is basically taking over the world right now. The are fabulous live! I saw them in an intimate setting back in 2015 and it was brilliant.

Bought this mid-week, from Archie Shepp's sometimes-derided years when he stopped being an avant-garde firebrand, and tackled the standards. This has a strange understated start, but really takes off after a minute or so. Kenny Werner's piano solo is a proper light-footed trip, Shepp seems to come in over the top off him as if annoyed by his showing off, stamps the lid shut on the bastard. Great version, methinks.

Most jazz fusion does little for me, and nearly everything the Jazz Crusaders did sounds cheesy to my ears... but I can't get enough of this groove.

Pleasant enough but there's much better stuff in that idiom. Get your teeth around some Bob James.

A fantastic track from a great bass player and group. McBee's style always strikes me as so vital, so full of life and energy.

Jazz violin is not for everyone, but I love the way guys like Billy Bang and Michael White play.

Extraordinary playing and writing, and the art work is peak 60s Reid Miles.

Just brilliant. For me this is basically early spiritual jazz; the energy of the ensemble playing creates a kind of ecstatic release in my mind, it takes me to a joyous place. The sound of the 2 drums as well as the wash of all the other instruments create this powerfully hypnotic, uplifting feeling.

That's pretty good, some of the solos drag a bit (especially Larrys), but when they're all playing together and all those tones overlapping each other, it's really something. The trumpet really reminds me of Donald Ayler, which is definite praise where I come from.

I find the B3 to be such a soulless (blunt) instrument. I think I would have enjoyed that a lot more with a bit of piano underpinning it all.
