Oh, man...that's pure road rage, isn't it? My otherwise lovely wife...often when we are out driving (and she is behind the wheel)...in an effort to address the fact that she may be having a negative experience with other motorists (and to pre-empt an outburst)...I will say (in much the tone of voice one would use to point out a beautiful animal, sunset, or autumn foliage) "Look at all the cocksuckers, sweetheart!"

right after highschool I realized I cussed WAY too much. I knew these great gals with a great mom. I got a little too comfortable one affternoon and I could tell that she was offended by my language. we got along real well before then and she pretty much avoided me afterwards.
so, I made an effort to only use the swears sparingly until the Kids grew up and now I need to be careful again... in real life. I'm still foul mouthed around here. I need to have SOME fun.
the main ones that slip out are "SHIT" when I drop or break something and "GOD DAMN IT" when I've had all I can stands and can't stands no more.

James (he's 14 now) swears entirely too much, and apart from telling him that nothing sounds more immature than adolescent swears, I may just have to let him learn his own lessons. When he was...2, we used to go to this lovely neighborhood park (we were the poorest residents in this hive of upwardly mobile yuppiedom)...lots of twins, nannies, fertility drugs/treatments...and many of the other toddlers had THESE things: We didn't own one (he was perfectly capable of walking to the park with me), so they were sort of very novel and appealing to him at that age. As soon as we got to the park, there would be about a dozen unattended little stroller cars, and he would immediately commandeer one and go tearing around the park in it. None of the other parents ever really objected, somehow. Anyhow - in loving imitation of his mother, he would OCCASIONALLY squeak the horn and yell "GO, BITCH!"

Many years ago (I'm not gonna look it up) I went to the movies with Michael Hurley's then-girlfriend (just look at me namedrop!) to see Hoffa. She was not ordinarily one to be overly offended by coarse language, but she was shaken by the liberal use of "cocksucker" in that movie. She told me, afterward, that she had no idea men used that word so much. Her tone suggested disappointment if not downright disillusionment. It made me reflect - although I don't think I said this to her - that it was kind of a weird term to use as an insult anyway, especially if you're a man. You know? I mean, maybe a lesbian could get behind it...

It's about as coarse as a word gets (phonetically, graphically, etc.), but...right, the paradox of an insult based in non-deviant practices is striking.

As an Aussie, it is my cultural right to swear freely and with general abandon, though of course as a teacher I have had to curb my natural instincts.
And as a person of Greek background, the liberal and multi-faceted use of the word malaka is a never-ending source of joy.

I use gamoto a lot. I really enjoy the sound and various ways you can project Ai sto diabolo ( go to hell) when greeks are angry they repeat the phrase over and over.

Yeah, "ah sto dia'olo" used to be one of my granny's favourite sayings when she was mad, said in the same spirit as "oh fuck off".

I love the idea that someone needed a stronger version of 'for God's sake', but just replaced 'God' with 'fuck' and ended up with something that makes no sense at all.
'for fuck's sake' is a beautiful expression, a world-beater. Many other languages don't really have an equivalent, and you see 'ffs' used in texts quite often. But it really needs to be SAID - and with the emphasis on 'fuck'. It creases me up to hear people say it.

I don't think cocksucker gets much usage in the UK, at least not round these parts. It's like we're aware of it, but it doesn't really give the same bite as a really good profanity. As an aside, I do think the word cockduster, used to indicate a particularly impressive moustache, is one of the great words of the modern age.
Btw, I reckon there's a big US/UK divide around motherfucker, it seems far too common in the US, and seems to insult anyone with children, which is a bit vague.

Yeah. I don't think I've ever heard it used in the UK in any real life situation.
'prick' (which appears to be a US creation) still has great power. A fine term of abuse.

Yeah, the power that a whispered prick holds, it's a real slug to the gut.

Yeah. I don't think I've ever heard it used in the UK in any real life situation. Do you mean as a flung insult in a confrontation? Because in other contexts than that it gets used reasonably often my me.
