Topic inspired by my recent Box Tops binge:
Like a number of Box Tops tracks, I disdained this for years, until suddenly I didn't. The lyric is fairly witty; more to the point, I'm impressed that they somehow managed to get a song that is blatantly about - let alone in favor of - sex workers into the US Top 30 in 1969! (Especially given that their superior previous 45 "I Met Her In Church" missed the Billboard Top 40... in other words, it's not like they had "hit momentum" on their side.)

What about this?
Is Monica a prostitute? I've always thought so, though Ray (in characteristic fashion) keeps it vague, with his narrator insisting that other men "can't buy" her. But is the lovestruck narrator just deluding himself? Does she reciprocate his adoration - or even know he exists? Why is she always under that lamplight at midnight? She ain't singin' doowop.
***
Others?

"Call Me" and "X-Offender" by Blondie
"Walk on the wild side" Lou Reed

Are you familiar at all with Richard Clapton, Charlie?
This was one of his biggest hits, 'Girls on the Avenue'...

I was hoping for more controversy and argument about the technicalities of what the world's oldest profession actually may be. Not so many songs about flint-knapping, but quite a few about hunting.

"Got some flints need knapping? Come on down to Knapper Joe's! We've got the best prices for knapping your flints! Find a better price and we'll beat it!"

Panic by The Smiths. London, Birmingham and Leeds all have notable red light districts. The song is written from the perspective of a frightened female being harrassed by kerb crawling predatory males. ....so said someone on twitter.

If we're widening the remit to include, ahem, 'good time girls' then there's this...

Of course, how much is that doggy in the window was probably one of the earliest examples.
