Jeez. Rate/ discuss the canon.
Only if you voted tho. Right, so you voted for it and therefore " well, i voted for it" is pretty much the discussion to be expected.
Wish there were other tracks, wish i had more than one vote, i prefer the other track, see the omissions thread, not my true favourite and the list isn't truly representative. The words of the righteous list club.
Take it out on the guy who asked why some of you didn't pick something less safe and then bitch about comments from a non voter in the bloated out of control project ,who's main interests and any passion was to be solely found in the omissions thread.
You guys. I feel like i moved the OCD guys crayon to the right.

I was confused at the beginning, but figured it out later. 73 was a big year for me in that I started buying albums that year. I had bought singles for the few previous years, and continued to do so, but I bought a few albums that year and got some as birthday and Christmas presents. I usually got double albums as gifts, since I couldn't afford them normally. I was mowing lawns, raking leaves, shoveling snow and delivering papers, so I had a little spending money, but I was also buying Mad magazines and paperbacks, the occasional Creem or Circus, plastic car models, pizza etc. Looking at the list it pleases me to no end to see all the r&b on it, as that was the first music I was into. Most music fans claim the Beatles were their first love, but Philly soul was mine. It's also nice to see mainly proto punk and new wave rather than cowboy hats and denim classic rock which was popular, at least in the US at the time. When people argue over who had a better 70's, Bowie or Neil Young, I always say, "The Isley Brothers." I'm happy to see That Lady was picked.

There was a George Carlin joke about why he never voted - that way, he said, whatever the result, "you can't blame me for it."
I think the next step is to, individually by person, talk them out of their vote and explain to them what they should have really voted for.
I steadfastly have no regrets about my vote.

Is this really everything from 1973? Shocked that I only picked one song from that year. Davey, this is from the Preludin Canon (G's initiative, remember?), not fange's 70s list Oh. Fuck. I have a mixed-up confusion.

It isn't about voting. It more what is the point of lists ?
No discussion lists, except for, ooh, it's sooo hard. Fange wrote a lovely piece, passionate and interesting and worthy of your list time.
I could make everyones day by starting a list your favourite lists thread. I will leave that for now.

please do!
'here's a list of songs people chose. From 1973. Discuss it please' absolute rubbish, as threads go YAY! Rubbish!
Curtis Mayfield - Right On for the Darkness (G) Rated CW (Canon Worthy) I always think the strings gild the lily when they first come on. I seldom think Curtis NEEDS the strings until they've been there for a while. great track. as usual, his vocal nails it for me. what a voice that guy had.
Iggy & the Stooges - Search and Destroy (adam) Certainly Canon Worthy. It may not be louder than the Viet Nam war but I LOVE seeing it on TV used to sell cars and turtle wax and whatever the fuck. Anne Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain (freap) Consumer Reports would call this the BEST BUY. Also Canon Worthy but so much more. I didn't realize how much I liked it until I started hearing very good versions by very good singers that didn't come CLOSE. this one nails me from the very first bar every time. Sneelock Approved!
Marvin Gaye - Trouble Man (davey)
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get it On (hatz) The Isley Brothers - That Lady (Fange) I'm bunching these together because I think all 3 have been enjoying enriched reputations lately and all 3 richly deserve it. CW cubed. Roxy Music - Mother of Pearl (goatboy) Never makes my Roxy Favorite lists until I hear it. it gets me every time. I love the blast off / I love the landing. Ferry had streamlined his warbling by this time to what I find a VERY pleasing sound. David Bowie - Time (DF)I like Aladdin better than Ziggy. there, I said it. I always have. Both are great but this track and the album as a whole strike me as ABSURDLY confident in both conception and execution. what I mean to say is - it's GRATE. As for the track , Histrionics can put you off sometimes and sometimes they can draw you in. this is one of those times. Lou Reed - Caroline Says II (dayo)Ezrin overproduced the ever living FUCK out of it and it ended up perfect. how does that work?
John Cale - The Endless Plain of Fortune (osgood)Rated NW (Near Worthy) I love his voice and I love the LP. it's a very nice track but it doesn't really stick to my ribs the way the others do. I mean, I don't really get it stuck in my head despite how lovely I think it is
New York Dolls - Personality Crisis (riggers)Rated cw (canon worthy but in lower case letters) I put my seal of approval on "search & destroy" it would seem curmudgeonly not to do the same for this. it's exciting. I'm glad it's in the world. I'd like to see it in a few more car commercials then maybe I'll upgrade my rating. Stevie Wonder - Living for the City (JSJ)I won't listen to it right now because then I'd have to compare it to the Anne Peebles. I'll leave Anne on top but I could not possibly love this here track anymore than I already do. it's funky, it's pointed, it has dialogue like a movie, Stevie sings like a motherfucker. always loved it/never get tired of it. CW PLUS. Wizzard - See My Baby Jive (ray)NW - NOT Worthy. sorry ray. I'll bet I'd feel differently if I grew up hearing it. As it is, by the time I heard it - it was anti-climatic. I loved The Move more as they went along. I loved that ELO / No Answer. After that, it's pretty much "Boulders" & "Wizzards Brew" for me. I don't know, "jive" just seems self conscious to me in a bad way.

Curtis Mayfield - Right On for the Darkness (G) !!!!!!!!!!! Brand new to me, and utterly fantastic. Do I just need to go ahead and buy this album? His voice is as stunning as ever on this track.

Well it's the best track on it, but 'Future Shock' and the title track are very good too. A couple of weakish tracks as well, and it doesn't have the heavyweight status of Curtis or America, but i'ts definitely worth having.

Time - David Bowie: Its baroque, Brechtian flamboyance is kind of preposterous, but works because he commits to it so fully. That said I would have preferred Drive IN or Cracked Actor as the 73 Bowie choice. The Endless Plain of Fortune - John Cale - I can see it has a stately, anthemic quality, but truthfully it's not a song that moves me much. The year itself is an embarrassment of riches, truly. I mean, whatever one makes of them, it wasn't a SMALL year for Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, McCartney, Elton, The Who, War (worth mentioning that they had the highest selling US LP that year), any NUMBER of black/soul artists. And...yeah, a hell of a year for glam (I haven't looked up single and LP release dates, but...I can only imagine what kind of year the likes of Sweet, Slade, Mott, et. al. had). Shit - Roxy gets nominated, and it isn't even a track from FYP. "20th Century Boy" is...well, does it NOT "slap"? These absences are what they are. With 2/3x the voting populace, I'd imagine we'd get a more widespread representation of all these favorites and more. Fange's "You can only pick 50" thread picks up a lot of the strays, spare parts, omissions (I feel like I certainly gave Sweet and Slade their due in spades when given an appropriately scaled canvas). Happy to see Iggy, Marvin (there was a time I'd have argued for LGIO as his actual album length triumph for ages), and several of the others. I don't hate the Wizzard song at all. Nor do I love it. I can absolutely see its charms as a feel good record (I really like the Christmas track, which...is not dissimilar to my ears). Lou Reed is nice enough (more Velvets residue from him), and John Cale...one of those things I like more than love (this seems like another album that I might end up really loving the best parts of - I heard something in the restaurant at lunch today that was him, and...surely from this era...sounded like Emitt Rhodes...well, yeah, I'm listening to it now thanks in part to this thread). Bowie - yes, undeniably a prime year. "Time" has (over time) probably become a little "grand" for my blood (we're adjacent to 'My Death" etc.), but...that said, Ronno's solo is a work of art, Garson is Garson (ALWAYS getting the last word, as he does here). I am ABSOLUTELY smitten with "Drive In Saturday" (I'm sure it made my 70s canon), "See Emily Play" (an uncoverable song that he and his henchmen really make their own), "Aladdin Sane", and...yes, I see the (to me, superior) "sax version" of "John, I'm Only Dancing" was both released and recorded in 1973 (is this NOT a triumph?).
