Hmm, deep into the kind of thing I have little tolerance for, but I can see it's up against The Waterboys, so I'm entrenched in a no-win situation right here. This is a strange rolling shuffling thing soul thing, the vocal sounds like it belongs to a Dolly Parton track or something, there's more than a hint of country attitude I'm getting from it. What I'm not getting, is any pleasure.
Right, stiff upper lip, lets get on with it, dive into the deep blue bland... Nine minutes? You're taking the piss. Bowie cast-off piano opening, with aimless drum machine. Bowie cast-off vocal, too, when it eventually starts. He's giving it some effort, you have to give him that, he's convinced of the epicness, yet it does remind me of The Bolshoi in its overall murky beige 80s pallet. A bit prog, innit, a bit Bunnymen, and a bit too much. Still, it's not another 70s soul number...

I was never a fan of that Delaney and Bonnie shit. I could stand JJ Cale because his band was a little tighter.
The Waterboys always have a pageantry and grandiosity to their songs that make you feel that they mean it.

In what is becoming a theme of the competition, I am in total disagreement with the comments thus far.
In fact, I reckon this tie is a bit of a corker!
A throws together slyly funky Rhodes, disco beats gone tribal, slide guitar and sugar candy high vocals for a concoction that is irrepressibly joyful. Great playing and groove propel this early 70s gem.
Scott/The Waterboys aren't popular on here and no doubt we'll get lots of adjectives such as "overblown" and "bombastic", whilst Hatz will complain about the lack of fiddles. Me, I think its epic, windswept atmosphere is rather wonderful, Scott's vocal is compelling and the whole thing has the dark mystery of a 19th century novel.
Tight, but I'm going A for being an under the radar pick, but well done to both.

Fuck, everybody's working really hard on A, aren't they? The drummer, the backing vox, the singer - knocking themselves out! But to what end? It's kind of a mess, really. There's no melody, the thing's too frantic to dance to. Not for me, sorry.
I really didn't have the patience to listen to B all the way through but there was something happening around halfway through, some kind of mood was established at least, with that fella's 'heartfelt vocal'. It might grow on me, I suppose. But I have no intention of ever listening to it again.
A very poor start to this round. Very poor.

Really dislike the screechy vocals and muddy production of A, but nine minutes of Brian Ferry on a prog bender ?...ugh...I'll give a marginal vote to B

Interesting match. Both tracks have elements I like; the Bonnie track has some lovely electric piano and groove, even if it's a pretty simple tune, and the Waterboys cut has some lovely playing, even though the track itself is a bit over-long. A because i'm feeling it a bit more this morning.

You know me so well! Actually, there is some "epic" Waterboys I like a lot, and this one definitely has its heart in the right place. That doesn't mean I'm up for 9 minutes, but - here comes my favorite backhanded compliment - I like what it's trying to do. The same could be said for A - nice groove, swingy band, not much song - but it has the advantage of (speaking of me being predictable) being much shorter.

The original version on the debut album is 7 and a half minutes, still long but it manages to justify its length. Not sure why the picker here went for an even longer version..maybe they just made a mistake.

a -always liked Bonnie's voice. Too bad it's buried here in this unattractive arrangement. The piano is quite nice, but everything else isn't, especially that horrid bass. Sounds like everything's been put through a wah wah, or possibly the spin cycle at the laundromat. Nope, actively disliked that. 2 / 10 b - thought for a few days back then that Mike Scott, as leader of Another Pretty Face, was going to turn into something great, but then he formed the Waterboys got overblown epic (not that there's anything wrong with that), and then discovered Ireland, at which point I gave up completely. That said, this is all right, didn't have to be any better than that to win. Find the comparisons with Ferry and the accusations of prog a bit weird, too. Anyway, didn't listen to it all, but 4 / 10 B
