B does sound a little strangled and trampled underfoot. A is brilliant of course but is also a grievous cup recidivist. I dunno...

B makes me want to be on drugs and wandering around the city on a warm summer night. A makes me want to flush a MOJO magazine down the toilet.

a I've heard this before in various cups. Thought it was meh then, still do. Nothing good ever came out of Johnny Otis. it's a reasonable pop performances, I suppose, but that plodding tempo and nursery rhyme structure puts me off. I shouldn't be surprised that it features large in the Boring Cock and Bollocks canon, though. The understanding and appreciation of black music over there is pretty abysmal. Ooh, as I wrote that suddenly there's an instrumental break completely at odds with the song and apparently continuing towards the end. Cutting edge? Nah, blunted (clever wording, cheers) rubbish. Nah, it's not meh, it's shit. File under Lennon, Julian 2.5 / 10 b I wouldn't necessarily choose to listen to this, but it's certainly different. the vocals are haunting, the soundscaping is interesting in places. Sod it, it wins here, not because it's obscure, but because it is more interesting, even if, ultimately, it's not something I would put on my Christmas list 4.5 / 10

I like both of these a lot. I have the Shuggie Otis album that was doing the rounds a few years ago but this isn't on it. I know the more famous cover, but this twinkling original is splendid too. B is of course a more "daring" pick in these environs, although there are proportionally more fans of this kind of stuff on here, but while I'm a big fan of the album I'm not 100% sure this specific cut works out of context. Still it's evocative and has Burial's trademark haunting beauty peeking out of the gloom in places.
I'll give this one a rare positive abstain

Good match. A is lucky I haven't gotten sick of hearing it yet, but then why would I - It's melodic and beautiful. Given a slightly closer opponent though I may have voted against it, but B isn't quite there. Not that there aren't elements about it I liked, because there are; the hypnotic clicks and crackles, the warm female vocals, those are enjoyable and might have made me pick it in another match. But it's just a bit too ethereal and wispy to win here against a song as strongly melodic and groovy as A. AI'm rather tired so I'm glad you went to the bother of speaking my brains, fange. A

Yeah, that's an A
the other has misjudged the voting public, I'm afraid, though it's pretty cool.

I like Shug a fair bit, and those guitar loops on the latter half of A are wonderful. They're enough to give my vote over B which is pretty solid and has some interesting textures going on too though as some others have pointed out never really seems to take off.

Can't believe it. My one mainstream critically acclaimed choice, beaten by a comfort blanket.
