Well, I get that it's not going to win, but I'm surprised by the kicking B id getting. Ochs was never a great singer, and his arrangement were often overdone. This one is so nondescript as to be a blank slate onto which Ochs spills his bitterness and disappointment. In fact I really don't know why the album it's from, Rehearsals for Retirement, isn't mentioned in the same breath as Plastic Ono Band, Sister Lovers, and other simiarly 'disasociative' records. I won't say it's better than A, but it digs deeper into his own psyche than Dylan was ever willing to do.

I think the thing with this one is that the arrangements are overdone in a more typical 70 way. Which normally means it'd be love here, but I've given up looking for rationale in voting behaviour. Anyway, although I tend to prefer Ochs when it's just him n' guitar, sometimes the overdone production just adds something. The overcooked brass on "The War is Over", the experimental tape noises of "The Crucifixion", the hiss on "Half a Century High", that kind of more non-standard arrangement excess works well for him. I'd argue against him not being a great singer in the same way I'd argue against people who say that Dylan isn't a great singer. When he found his range, he was as effective as anyone.

I feel the opposite. I'm surprised people are largely being quite kind about it. It seems a case of people being influenced by the artist rather than judging the track. If this had come from Barry Manilow (as it easily could have done.. although it would no doubt have a better vocal if it had) can you imagine what some here would be saying about it? They wouldn't be talking about Barry's poetic muse that's for sure!

However bad you might think Ochs was, as a singer, he’s like Pavarotti compared with Dylan. Fucking hell.
B. By default.

If this had come from Barry Manilow (as it easily could have done.. (rofl) (rofl) It might have just as easily been Pat Boone who knew what it was like to be dead...but it wasn't.

A - not a Dylan believer but he deserved his reputation from 64-66.

Not all of it, but you can't have everything.

I have heard PotH. From what I remember I liked it. I don't remember it sounding like the track in this tie though.

That's one of Dylan's best moments. And it's not one of Ochs'. The lyrics sound sincere and significant but the arrangement is ghastly.

I did not like the Ochs tune at all.

I've heard of Ochs of course - he gets a lot of props on this site, for a start - but that doesn't make me want to investigate further. It was just ok. Its not in the same postcode as A, which pretty much towers over everything I've heard in this round.

An unlucky pairing for B, perhaps. I heard a really good Phil Ochs song just yesterday – wasn’t this one though!

Ochs has never clicked for me. Maybe one day.
