A Certain Ratio are always kinda hit and miss with me, but this is not my favorite Crystals song.

A is just a rhythm machine with some shit vocal on the top, isn't it? I hate ACR and all that posey early electronica, it just sounds inept
B

The condition of the master of B is a bit distracting, but a glorious slice of teen melodrama still cuts through. Love the song, love the arrangement - love everything about it, really.
A is pretty good.

At the time I found ACR quite refreshing with a sound that was quite original. Listening back to this now, the tune moves from moody and hypnotic to monotonous over the course of its four minutes. Musically though its skeletal, downbeat funk still hits hard. I found B's song kind of dragged as much as I like those girl group productions. It felt quite formulaic of its time.

There are some good things in A - the vocals and the insistent bass - but I find the beats and other production elements (those piano chords) sound pretty clunky these days.
B is pretty poor as records of its kind go. The vocal is sweet but the song and production sag and drag.

B is sweet, but I quite like early ACR and A wins here.

I liked both. At the start I thought B was just a substandard piece of a wonderful era, but a careful listen offered all its charms, and there were many, even if the sound of the clip left a lot to be desired. That arrangement with the strings and the guitar was exquisite.

I've probably got a gazillion records that sound like A, whether I'd appreciate this more if I'd heard it before the other things, is a question no-one else is interested in. There's a lot of Clock DVA/The Box about that bassline, and a lot of Cabaret Voltaire about the echoing drum machine. That sparseness in these early 80s electro-funk things does come across as quite clunky, always feels like there's an instrument missing somewhere.
Already bored of B's type of thing, and it seems like a particularly tedious type of that kind of thing. Mr Weetabix must've hit the heroin hard that morning, he can't lift the strings off the floor, can't stop the vocals swirling down the plughole. Almost interesting in its wrong-speededness. Almost.

More Factory, how'd that happen? Anyway, I know precious little of ACR but I was aware of this one and its pretty ace, all that cold funk and insistence. As for B, I'm also getting a little tired with the amount of middling, creaky relics like this being cast up. Its not He's A Rebel, is it? Hardly B's fault, I know but an easy win for
