There's a definite genius to Hot Chocolate's productions that you never really hear about. There's no retrospective articles on their pop genius, but fuck was it there ( ..for a time anyway, I did get fed up of them in the eighties). Just that guitar riff alone is great and when you combine it with that bass and spacey synth wash, you get something that sounds very special indeed. It's obvious to me who picked it as they've been going for big, populist pop choices throughout; within the context of what everyone else is picking it's actually quite refreshing and it's certainly working for them in the voting.
Well done B for not going for obvious Neneh. Very interesting production that has that Bristol sound. To be honest the production and arrangement was much more interesting than the song which was a little mundane. Interesting pick though and I'd like to reward it, but unfortunately you've met a bit of a juggernaut here.

cherry is a million miles away from my utopian universe.
hot chocolate is infectious enough, but i can't help associating it with a really irritating UK advert from back in the day.
A i suppose.

B's pretty good, I love Neneh's voice, and there's all sorts going on in there to make it interesting. Good choice.
But the Hot Choc track really is a blast. The main guitar riff the whole thing is centred around is some kind of genius, it's like what you want EW&F or Funkadelic to do but they're too busy wanking off

Neneh's always been my thing - so much going on in the arrangement, but never overshadows the voice. Seems like there's a little bit of everything good from the last 50+ years of music - yet it never sounds messy or like too many cooks - it's all of a piece. It's nice to have her back.
I know the same can be said about A to an extent - I suppose it's simultaneously exotic and catchy the first several times one hears it - but I've heard it too much and Errol Brown's voice is a bit of an acquired taste that I've never quite acquired. At the high end it's neither smooth nor compelling - just a bit weedy and strained.
An easy B.

Hot Chocolate are doing similar things other funk bands were in the late 70's, while Neheh has never been typical and always sounds just out of bounds... Vote B

I used to like Neneh Cherry. Not so much. I think lots of folks give her credit her music doesn't deserve.

Hard draw for you, B. I like this NC pick, it has an interesting sound and feel, and probably would have got my vote in several other matches. But not against the majesty of A. Solid-gold class.

Pfft, Hot Chocolate must've been on every tv show in my youth, at least 3 times a week, their ubiquity was pretty annoying, and I was quite happy never hearing them again. Certainly, I wouldn't regard this as one of their best anyway, the main riff is catchy enough, but they haven't built a song around it, and it's all very shrill.
B's a strange arrangement, they've let someone loose on too many of the toys, that annoying spacey synth was a stupid addition to what could've been a nice Massive Attacky Bjork thing. The steel drum sound is cool, and Neneh's vocal is decent enough, has a nice swagger about it. But really, surely they must've listened to it at some point and gone, "what cretin thought the air-horn was cool"?
Still, fuck Hot Chocolate. When it's cooled down a bit.

Light and shade, innit. The problem is, you don't think that 2 Black and Deckers drilling through sheetrock can be an essential part of songwriting. And fair play for making me notice that I'd accidentally voted for Hot Chocolate...
