The obscurest tie yet..? A takes a lot of time to build, too long actually, and it's all a bit sub Nick Cave. However there's quite a lot happening in the production and it does achieve a quiet power. Not bad. B is rubbish. Who keeps picking this stuff? A

A is genuinely interesting. I wasn't keen initially but it's moodly strong. Neofolk, eh? new one to me.
B was so bad I'm still shaking after hearing 18 seconds and I need a lie down

Quite probably, yes. It's been an interesting cup so far - I like the way it's been a complete free-for-all but there have been some unfathomable selections!

A sounds so much like Nick Cave to me I almost thought it was a parody. And the "thoughtful" lyrics don't exactly help the cause either. If things are classic for a reason it stands to reason that they're also obscure for a reason sometimes.
Outside of the context of the cup, I would never listen to more than 30 seconds of B. I try to embrace the randomness of life as much as possible, but somehow I'm not feeling very enriched by it this time.

Hardly the most obscure tie yet, Anaal Nathrakh aren't obscure in any way, they're probably the biggest Brit black metal name. Rome are a band I've been aware of for a while, probably the only neofolk band that seem to have any kind of reputation for quality at all, outside of Current 93, Death in June, and The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud. Nothing I've heard has stuck with me though. This is less folky/martial than I expected, although just as I wrote that it started with the marching rhythm and German samples. Reminds me of Whassisface from The Tindersticks more than Nick Cave. It's not bad, but has that overproduced sheen that reminds me of Then Jericho or something. Just something that stops it really connecting with me.
And B is marvellous. I was going to pick some Atari Teenage Riot to be annoying, but then thought that black metal was probably going to be under-represented in the cup. I love the dynamism in this one, the way those stupidly fast blast beats are underpinned by that really percussive bass, the way the vocals overlap, and it has none of the normal lo-fi values of traditional bm, they've really gone to town on the studio side of things, everything is crisp and clear, nothing is organic and natural sounding. Even the guitar reminds me of Ministry's "The Deity" hitting light speed. Bunch of miserable bastards, this is clearly the track of the round.

Proper Refugecore stuff here.
Rome are one of the few Neofolk outfits that are critically friendly, which probably has as much to do with being openly left-wing in a genre with a nefarious reputation for nationalism. This example is decent enough but very derivative of what it’s taken from, especially the stock Death in June-lite German samples (why?).
Anaal Nathrakh wouldn’t be an obscure name to anyone who’s followed Black Metal since the 00s. It’s not my preferred side of the genre but unlike A it’s doing its own thing with the sound and therefore wins my vote.
B.

I love the way this Anaal Nathrakh track reminds me of some of the Dramatics' or Chi-Lites' best stuff; beautiful production and vocals, lots of groovy space, just a pleasure to listen to. But for all that, i'm going for A, which is better than a swift kick to the nadgers.

I liked A a lot, in fact it is one of the top discoveries in this Cup for me.
So B is Death Metal. Glad to know.

There's a massive difference. Death metal is for psychotics whilst black metal is for neurotics.
