A started off a bit too bloody chirpy for my liking, I prefer my Ornette a bit more skronky, with a bit more freedom and fire. It improves as it builds though, with the extended solos. Perhaps still a bit too sparse for my liking, and a bit too chirpy as they join forces again at the end. More be-bop than Free Jazz.
I've got a lot of time for Roy Wood, but I have to say, I really, really dislike this song an awful lot. It used to be on some mixtape or comp my dad had in the car, followed by Pilots' equally annoying "January", and I grew to hate it over months or years of car journeys. Does me head in.

I thought Ornette Coleman made inaccessible 'burning zoo' type records! this was pretty good
'See My Baby Jive' is one of the greatest A-sides ever, so really there's not much point in overthinking this

Roy Wood's always been a bit of a mystery to me. All the talent in the world, really could create an indelible sound all by his lonesome. But as is often the case, lots of sound and not much fury, and signifying only slightly more than nothing. It's fun and disposable, and there it ends. I never have a need to listen to him, probably because he never sounds like he needs to sing anything. Sure needs to show us he can play every instrument ever invented, though.
There are not a lot of jazz artists I love; Ornette is one of them. Despite his reputation being based on "free" stuff, it never sounds unfocused to me. It's loaded, and maybe overloaded at times, but he's supremely melodic and rhythmically supple, and some of his music's downright pretty. I hear beauty in it all the time. To my ears A is not only the more challenging listen by far, it's more rewarding too.

After Ray's chastising about drive-by voting, I've tried to be more diligent about actually listening to most of every song.
Which I did on this one. Jazz is lost on me.

I'd seriously question anyone who picks A over some pop brilliance from 'ol Roy.
Honestly, by miles...

Sure Wood has pop nous, but it's all a bit end of the pier and its Primark Spectorisms have long lost their charm for me. It just sounds a bit cheap and tacky and reminds of bad 70s Saturday night tv.
But I'm not keen on the Coleman much either. I just don't like the tone of his playing and it seems to lack purpose.
I dunno really... A

I don't care for B--I'm not sure I could always give A my full attention, but it would be more rewarding when I could.

Good match. I like both of these very much, old favourites. Especially with this album, OC's reworking of the past is much more in evidence than his move towards free jazz; it's playful and inventive in tone, and pure fun to listen to. B is probably my fave Wood song, and the production is superb with so much going on. Gah, tough choice. Maybe A for being the more left field choice, but both deserve it.

Many years ago I could praise things like B in a tongue-in-cheek way, but not anymore. And A is simply great music. I have Coleman filed under 'difficult bordering unlistenable' but this track is asking me to check further and reconsider.
