Oh it's a nice little way to make money, no? But it's kind of a pain to have to make trips to the PO every time you get an order.

It's not so much the trips to the post office as the cleaning and packing that gets to be a bit of a drag. Taken me the best part of three hours to prepare 16 orders to lug off to the PO today.

I’ve been selling on Discogs for a couple of years now. I have about 250 - 300 items for sale at any given time. It makes for nice pocket money and offsets (and then some) whatever I spend on product for myself. I’ve been selling quite a lot since the Covid shutdowns. The trips to the Post Office were a bit worrisome until a friend pointed out that one can purchase mailing labels (including postage) from Discogs or PayPal. I knew that they advertised buying shipping/mailing labels but didn’t realize they meant I was also buying the postage. You simply purchase and print out the label; which includes the tracking number and bar code, etc. If I don’t have actual labels I print it on paper and (carefully) tape it down on the package so as not to mar the bar code. It is the same price on Paypal as if I’d gone to the Post Office. Discogs add a bit for themselves. But Discogs is much easier to deal with on international shipping than PayPal. So domestic postage from PayPal and international from Discogs works best here. Then I can leave them for the mail carrier to pick up and he scans them for me immediately so that I can see the tracking begin right away. I haven’t set foot in the Post Office for a couple of months and don’t have to deal with dopey maskless Americans proving how independent they are!

You may already know Ray, but shipping to the US has almost doubled in price. I've got stung on it this week.

Ones I use – large letter and small parcel had gone up by 50% - cost me a tenner. I could complain about no notice, but I haven't been in a PO for three months, so it's hardly their fault.

The couriers' are a bit cheaper (I use parcel2go.com) but they've gone up a lot too. I'm currently changing my listings to put a lot more on US posting so I'll probably lose my US custom now.

Oh dear. First of all, this exchange of messages
On 08/06/20, 10:50AM, andpet72 wrote: Hello, how much is shipping Israel without boxes 4 disc ?? can I offer my price ?? www.discogs.com/ru/sell/item/1143181787On 08/06/20, 10:29AM, dyinglight wrote: Hi, This is a sealed Mint CD in a digipack. I am not prepared to open it and risk it being wrecked in transit for the sake of saving a small amount in the postage costs: the best I could manage on these is £5.60 (£5.30 postage and 30p packaging). I believe my prices are fair, and I am afraid I am not prepared to sell any lower than the price asked, so the overall cost would be £10.55. I'm sorry if that disappoints you. Best wishes Ray Granger On 08/06/20, 09:35AM, andpet72 wrote: I asked you for 4 disks without boxes. only if they are replaceable. in the case of Kravitz. naturally he remains as he is. without boxes 3 + 1 lenny disc ?? delivery ?? Simply Red - Big Love (CD, Album) 3,95 £ GBP Madonna - Rebel Heart (CD, Album) 2,95 £ GBP for these I can offer 2,00 £ GBP you for each disc My reply My apologies. I realize English is not your first language, but people often use the numeral 4 to mean 'for' and that is what I thought you meant. That said, I do not send discs without boxes, and I do not accept offers on what are already low-priced items, sorry. Best wishes Ray G
Then, a couple of days later, he orders a mint LennyKravitz CD in a digipack for £4.95 and a mint Enrique Iglesias CD for £1.95 and set shipping for £7.20, with (I thought - I could not find it, so maybe I neglected to press send on the message, my bad) an explanation that this package was borderline between a large letter and a small parcel, and that if if it turned out to be the cheaper option I would refund the difference, £1.30
Then:
did you say that 5 £ will cost shipping ??
It is too expensive for me. if so, close the order.
So I wrote Depending on whether the parcel goes as a large letter or a small parcel – I will not know until I go to the post office as it is a matter of millimetres – the postage costs would be £5.30 or £6.63. The extra 60p is for the corrugated card protecting the CDs and the padded envelope they would be sent in. I am sorry that this is too expensive for you, but it only just covers my costs. I have cancelled the order at your request. Ray Granger
and I cancelled the order
Then: I do not need any tape. Just put the corton tight on both sides. you wind up the whole thing so that you don't move and that's it. you're making things too sweet. you can send one disc without a box. shove it in a bag. put the book and the back insert separately and that's it.
& then
£ 7.20 for that kind of money they send me 15 discs without boxes, not just two. Sweden, Denmark and so on.
So I wrote back I'm very sorry you are disappointed, but I do not operate like this. It is all set out in my seller terms [it is, sort of]. Even if I were to do what you asked, the cost for sending over 100gms from the UK to Israel is £5.30, plus the minimal cost of packaging. I pointed this out in an answer to the very first message you sent me about the Lenny Kravitz CD. I hope you get the CDs you want elsewhere. Please do not contact me again about this. I will not be replying further. Ray Granger
So, unfortunately, if a buyer cancels an order, he gets to leave feedback, anyway and I am afraid my 100% rating on 852 orders (https://www.discogs.com/sell/seller_feedback/dyinglight) that I was so proud of is about to go out the window for the sake of an excitable wanker who can't understand or speak English, sees robbery everywhere and wants me to subsidise his bizarre tastes.
I'm actually quite upset about this, my first negative experience on discogs.
On the brighter side, since I went back on at the end of June, I've pulled in around £3k even aft3r discogs' cut, including getting £700 privately for that Sisters of Mercy single mentioned at the beginning of the thread.

just received...
The Discogs Marketplace is undergoing some changes to deliver the buying experience people have come to expect when shopping online. It also ensures compliance with tax and legal requirements and keeps the marketplace sustainable. You can find more information on the background of these changes on our blog.
Shipping Policies will be a requirement for all your listings in the marketplace by October 1, 2020. We're introducing some changes that make the Shipping Policy editor more flexible and customizable, including the ability to combine format and weight, and a free text field to name your own policy. Online buyers are accustomed to understanding the exact amount they'll be paying before they checkout, meaning fewer order cancellations, and non-paying buyers.
Learn more about Shipping Policies here, or sign up for one of our webinars in your region.
These changes help us ensure the longevity of Discogs so we can keep driving music buyers to your Discogs shop and continue to provide music data that is open, free, and archived forever.
Sincerely, Discogs

load of bollocks, really. Apart from that twerp above, I've never had anyone cancel because of the price of shipping. I can't imagine that's the real reason behind it [/jimbo]

I nearly sold my Elvis 1968 DVD box a couple of days ago, but the shipping and tax to Australia put the prospective buyer off. I don't blame him, actually.

I keep toying with the idea of entering my collection into Discogs database, but the amount of work involved really turns me off. Do those of you who have done it grade your records? I assume Discogs has grading guidelines you can follow...I dunno, I'll probably never do it. Too lazy.

As it happens I sold a 12inch double to an Aussie today, and the postage and tax more than doubled the £12 cost, but he took it in his stride. Regular buyers are just used to it. The problem with what discogs want is CDs and boxes really. They come in such an assortment of weights and sizes you can't really legislate ahead for every possibility: it's not just the postage, it's the different levels of packaging required. I suppose you could just inflate your standard rate to take in every possibility, but that's hardly a help for buyers, is it?

I assume Discogs has grading guidelines you can follow...I dunno, I'll probably never do it. Too lazy. I mostly sell CDs. They're easier to pack and send and they're still popular. I started out only putting things I really wanted rid of up there, things that were relatively expensive (£15 rather than £7 CDs, for example, or £40 box sets). Every few weeks I'll add some more. I only have about 80 items there. I grade most things 'near mint', because in fact they are - I've a lot of CDs that have rarely been played. The ones I've played a lot, I want to keep. Stands to reason, I suppose. www.discogs.com/seller/JohnCoan/profile
