It was all majestic, wasn't it? So long as it was European. Whether mainstream crowd-pleasers, or Belgian stuff given out free to 25 people on flexidisc, synth-pop pretty much always sounded great. The cold sound of the future, with the grittiness of cheap equipment that meant that it always sounded earthy and real whatever the intentions of the artist. Celebrate it here, and give praise to those plucky pale kids with big hair and a second hand Yamaha.

I have a very soft spot for Blancmange.
I thought Heaven 17 were the epitome of pop sensibility and creativity - kind of the Chic of the genre.

It was all majestic, wasn't it? No, no it wasn't. It really really wasn't. OK, you like it great. But you can't get away with using a word like 'majestic' for that trouser-trumpet, posey stuff.

I remember when Ladytron came out, around twenty years ago, and thought how dated and naff that 70s/80s synth music sounded. Now I listen to the best music of that era and to me, it has a timeless quality. Yet in a strange way, it also still sounds like the future. It's transcended its time.

You're out of order. So soon in the lifespan of this forum, and I've never had to frown quite so severely in someone's general direction. Even the posiest of trouser trumpets managed the majestic with synth-pop: youtu.be/JE2sCISQmpE

An Aussie hit from '83. Is it a great song? Meeeh. But is it catchy? Catchy as fuck.

I never managed to get hold of much Severed Heads, the stuff I did get hold of was a bit late 80s and far too clean sounding. Actually, this one's quite clean sounding for the time, too, it must have a bit of modern spit n' polish applied?

But in a similar vein, TG's Christ Carter had some ace solo instrumental work:

I'd like to take the opportunity however to give a general warning to gentle readers that you included a SPANDAU BALLET link.

What happened to "it was all majestic"? It was all majestic, wasn't it? So long as it was European. I was actually hoping the yanks would take offence and provide some quality U.S. synth stuff.
