Predictable old vs. predictable new. Bottom line is Holter's appeal has largely eluded me, and A is in the Hall of Fame for that kind of stuff. I'd prefer its space be saved for something that needs the attention, but B ain't it.

Pfft. Another? Pebbles volume 92? Big guitar sound, it has to be said, but it seems disconnected from the standard Merseybeat vocal. I just don't need to hear another average obscure 60s rock song ever again.
I guess Julia doesn't have much to do to win this one. It's kinda intriguing from the start. I've got two of her albums, but they've never done much for me. Is this over-arranged, is there anything below the strings and floating backing vocals? I want to refrain from saying coffee-table. Or Enya. Which is probably unfair, I'm just unsure if there's a substance beneath the style, a passion, a power. Actually, those strings develop quite well, don't they, I like what goes on there. It's more like Sigur Ros meets Kate Bush than Enya. Which is both a positive, and also doesn't exactly set your pulse racing. I bet The Guardian love it.

Julie Holter is one of those artists whose record reviews sound interesting until I actually listen to her music.

A is a little like that Nuggets choice in round 1 - they make a guitar-based racket special by means of smart production techniques, effects. It's not yer usual lo-fi romp. In fact it's kind of a classic.
B is simply not my thing at all. I would maybe listening to it while CAMPING for the full nightmare experience

Still not completely sold on Holter, but it's enough to hold off the nuggets onslaught...Vote B

There's been a long running debate when it comes to "When the Night Falls", I still maintain that "You're Too Much" and "I'm Rowed Out" are superior. Still "When the Night.." is a great sounding thing with those abrasive, distorted guitars and something of a freakbeat classic.
I really like what I've heard of Julia Houlter. This one was intriguing although slightly formless and wafting. I'd still have liked to vote for it though so it's a shame about the draw.

Smart, respectable people seem to like Julia Holter. I'm willing to admit that it's me, but I just don't get her.
A is pretty typical for this crowd, but fortunately I like this sort of thing so...

A is one of my favourite tracks of all time, but it's an incredibly safe and predictable pick. if B were even a little bit good, it would've got my vote. unfortunately, it wasn't.

Good match. A is fab, everything i like about the sonic adventurousness of '65, but B has really impressed me with its subtle shifts and a moody beauty that has really grown on me. It has a kind of ECM Records vibe i really like, where the best of it has a sort of chilly and austere veneer, but also a deeper warmth and melodic hooks that grab me and make me come back. Nice pick.

A, I know it's not your fault, but I'm saturated of this kind of thing. Please come back when you've learned to play your instruments. I'm smart and respectable, and I rate Have You in My Wilderness as one of the best albums I've heard this side of the millenium. But Aviary left me absolutely cold, even upset, because I had high expectations, but I found it unnecessarily long and rather dull with just a few fine moments. B is not one of them, and I would vote against it on many ties, but not here.

I wanted to like B more than I did, but I had to stop it after 3 minutes - that was enough.
A's got great tension for what it is - the out-of-time vocals are both annoying and really cool at the same time.

I do like the fact that obscure freakbeat also-rans The Eyes are considered lamely predictable. And yet here we are. Its really good though - I only know the ace I'm Rowed Out, and this is also great - they had something for sure. Another one from that Nuggets pile though. I have found Julia Holter hit & miss to be honest, this is kind of symptomatic of my issues - its superficially attractive, in that less screechy Joanna Newsom style of hers, but its also a bit indistinct and half-formed.
