A is a hell of a lot of fun. my old mate greg, hit the jackpot with them. certainly, the best band on his voxx label. of course B is great, but ultimately a vote for the predictable will undoubtably come to the fore, for shame and a complete lack of imagination. a general pattern which has been followed throughout this whole sorry competition.

Agree with what's said above, although unfortunately A is pretty slight and only mildly interesting to me. It's certainly not worthy of being in a competition that includes the whole history of music. Don't know what would possess someone to pick it over, say, an obscure Kinks track from 1967. But I have to ask myself, that aside, is B worthy? As misguided and obvious a pick as it is, in the end I answer in the affirmative. One of the great Kinks songs.

Both very good but I have to give it to Ray. I've never been mad keen on the chorus bits that go on for ever, but it's still a bit of a corker

I think I can answer Hatz' question "why would anyone pick A?" and the answer must surely be because it's a fizzing pop bottle of a track - full of life and a breath of fresh air. It's hard to do retro revivalism well, you can easily end up with something too mannered and studied. This lot not only get the details right - the driving Entwhistle style bass or The Hollies backing vocals say, but more importantly they sound like they're having a bloody good time doing it and that translates.
B is certainly in my top five Kinks songs. It's one of the most moving things Davies wrote and I feel bad not voting for it, but I feel I must reward something that was completely new to me and that I enjoyed so much I played it twice off the bat.

No, this sot of studied revivalism does nothing for me. As already noted many times, the original era doesn't do that much for me. There's a bit of Velvets about that guitar solo, which is the best thing about the track, but given all the nuggets, pebbles, and possibly other variations of igneous rocks, this comes across as pointless to me. I do like the lifting of the tone-arm sound at the end of the youtube, at least someone was impressed enough to record this from vinyl. Not for me though.
I'm wondering if I like the idea of The Kinks more than the Kinks in practice. I guess there's bits of this that sound a bit Incredible String Band ish at the start, and some of the brass is ok. The vocal really isn't working for me though, it veers between Merseybeat and Scott Walker quite bizarrely. There's a hell of a lot going on here though.
Yeah, it just about does enough, by throwing the kitchen sink at it, some bits work. B

Kudos to A, playing it without extra info sounded to these old ears of mine as an authentic 60s thing, and quite a good one, I must say. Only after reading the comments I got that it is a revivalist act. It could have got my vote in many ties. But B is a monster track, and I don't consider it obvious, at least not much (more or less like that Dylan track a few rounds before). Besides, I voted against Ray and the boys in that GNOSE thing and I still feel guilty about it.

Good match. I like both in terms of sound and feel, so will just go with which one i'd play most. B still blows me away with how great a song it is, and it gets its nose in front for that reason.

B is great, but Kinks' tracks I've heard a million times is not why I'm here. A does enough to make me want to investigate further.
