I always think of Swedes (and by extension, Swedish music) as being great emulators. They take very great care to copy the exact sounds and the exact styles of already-existing things without adding anything of their own. I imagine Stockholm to be full of expensive 'retro chic' shops. It's all very precise and clever and ultimately soulless. That may be unfair but it's how I see it. This bob hund thing is a good example. It's made by robots. You touch it and it falls over and nobody's hurt, they just produce another model. That's not to say I dislike it, just...
I don't know who the hell Dick Rivers is but I prefer it to B

Exotic! I've always liked B, but I kind of know what to expect from them by now. A is cool and sort of does its thing and moves on, which is always good. Not that it seems like anything that unusual for its genre, but it's grabbing me a bit more at the moment.

I'm not really digging either to be honest. Both have a blaring, unwelcome quality. A gets monotonous quite quickly. I'm familiar with B because their appearance has become something of a cup tradition. This is their usual rag bag of messy energy. They're one of those artists who really struggle to write anything vaguely memorable.
There's a bit more to B here though.

Dick Rivers! It's as if someone was pressured into thinking of a pornstar name really quickly, and ended up sounding like a victim of the gush. Another odd choice, what's with the holding back the esoteric till the end? Sounds very contrived and film-soundtrack set-piecey, but it's still quite a lot of fun.
Bob Hund again? Someone's having a laugh. I like the Kraftwerkian synth riff. "I'm the operator with my Swedish calculator". No, he's just not very good, is he? Sounds like he's having a lot of fun, throwing all his influences into one weird plastic indie track, but it's not for me, ta.

Not liking the vocals of B...A, at least, sounds like something from 'In like Flint', so Vote A

Well, I'm not well-known for my love of Francophone pop, still less of their laughable attempts at rock and roll, but stap me, I'm finding the guitar sound on this agreeably, if politely, unhinged, and Dick a bit better at this than Johnny H. And it's over before it outstays its welcome. Cripes. 5 / 10
Not feeling this, particularly, although the organ sound is nice in places. 4.5 / 10
A, surprisingly

Dick Rivers! It's as if someone was pressured into thinking of a pornstar name really quickly As it happens, the French bloke took the name from an Elvis character in one of his early movies, but being French misheard Deke Rivers as Dick. Not that I knew that, I just looked him up on wiki.

Well, another tie where I liked both picks. Very much with Ray on A, but B was also quite nice. And just to level the match a bit...

Oh, A quite easily. That guitar sound is ace!
I could imagine getting excited precisely once by that Bob Hund tune and then never needing to hear it again.

Well for those of you HATING on the bob hund tune the live version has a bit more oomph about it, I should probably have picked that one instead actually.
I can understand not getting into them though as the language barrier is certainly a thing, and the lyrics - full of dadaistic satire, quick wit and evocative imagery and wordplay - are a big part of the appeal: I got into them when I was looking for music to help me learn Swedish.
And while there is some truth to what John says about the Swedes being better imitators than originators, what really appealed to me about the band was that they didn't sound like everyone else: while every other '90s band in Sweden - and largely abroad - was peddling either bottom-of-the-barrel Britpop, leaden grunge, fey and/or slacker indie, or starchy safety-rock (Soundtrack of Our Lives, anyone?), they basically ignored what everyone else was doing and instead sounded like Kraftwerk gone punk, then just used that as a basis to throw all their other ideas around.
They can certainly be too jumpy and unfocused and not everything they did worked, and they are still going now though they should have called it a day several albums ago, but the first five albums plus the live one and some of the non-album bits and bobs all have moments of great fun, invention, catchiness and oddness, although none of them are totally consistent and they never did get the production right.
And they were reportedly triffic live back in the day.

Another good match. Again, both are generally "my thing" enough and i would be happy to hear them again, though to be honest i probably wouldn't search them out myself. Really like the big arrangements on A, and that gets it over the line.

A is a really poor song that’s trying too hard to be “with it”. B doesn’t particularly move me but it’s certainly more likeable than A.
