Great pics, but pretty pathetic captioning all round, really: one woman is in three pictures, variously a friend and unknown, being whipped by Gerard Malanga. He's still alive. Why didn't they ask him who it was? I would have. The guy from the original photo is in another later on, when you can see full profile. I don't think it's MacLise or Name, but he looks vaguely familiar.

Definitely not MacLise, whose brief tenure with the group predated their involvement with Warhol (and, iirc, them adopting the name The Velvet Underground).
Seeing Ken Weaver of The Fugs in one of those shots was a nice surprise!

 Iron Butterfly with comedy legend Red Skelton, September 1969. Rare to see the IB guys looking so happy. It's harder to read Red's expression. (I just looked it up: Red was 56 at the time. I'm 57 now. Sheesh.) |
