Cale might have had a chance in quite a few of the other draws, but not against REM....Vote B

Haha! I almost want to vote for B because of how much it would piss off who I suspect is responsible for A. Fortunately for them I just can't.
"REM when they were good." I know, I know. But they were never that good. And it's not exactly like it's digging deeply into the bowels of obscurity.
Plus, A is from a wonderful record, all the more wonderful for how avant-garde or "challenging" it isn't. Cale as a pop songwriter - particularly a great one - can't be anything that would have occured to anyone at that point.

At some point I decided solo Cale wasn't for me ...too solemn, too sonorous, too furrowed brow. And now I'm thinking I may have got that completely wrong, or at least partially wrong. I thought A had a real lightness of touch and I wasn't expecting the lift off of that Beach Boys style chorus. I really enjoyed this one and will be checking out its parent album. The ReM has one of Buck's spindly, chiming riffs which immediately makes it very listenable. However it never really takes off and there's an air of REM going through the motions within their comfort zone about it all.

A is probably Cale's most beautiful song, better even than anything on Paris 1919 (which I LOVE, for what it's worth). I think it's insane the way the thing is overlooked.

Fisrts time I heard that Cale song, and felt the need to check the album asap. But ... but ... I have to disagree with hatz statement above. REM really were that good, and it shows here.

Oh, fab match. That song is such a beautiful gem in Cale's catalogue, the cryptic lyrics balanced by the warm immediacy of the music. But this is one of my favourite REM songs, the perfect middle ground between their spikier indie side and their poppier, melodic instincts. With apologies to A ...

I also decided long ago that solo Cale was not for me, and this track does nothing to dissuade me from that. It feels like a more daytime friendly version of Bill Fay, that chorus is just too syrupy and overcooked, the backing ooohs being especially offensive to these ears.
REM are doing the REM thing quite well hear, it's a nice delicate guitar riff, and Micky Stipe is mumbling earnestly. Doesn't exactly set my bowels on fire, but it does just about enough throughout the pretty verses to win here.

REM do their 'Battle Of The Bands - semi-final' thing quite adequately, I suppose

i should really explore solo cale although this selection doesn't really get the juices flowing. the rem track just doesn't do it for me.

Second attempt at posting... I have that Cale record but have never really listened to it properly - always defaulting to the ace Paris 1919 but that’s clearly my bad as that’s a wonderful sounding thing. B find REM at their best, for me, a delightful circling chiming track, still fresh. Really good tie - apologies to A but it’s

Those early to mid 80's REM albums are the ones that resonate with me the most. I'm reminded of summers in my hometown, bombing around in my friend Andrew's Renault Fuego listening to this stuff and it makes me happy.
I've got a few solo Cale albums and eps, but not Vintage Violence for some reason. This tune sounds great.
