Love these both - though A gets off to a rather slow start - but I suspect B will have a tougher time of it since the proggers have mostly stayed behind on BCB.

I can't get into anything by SM after the debut, although I love Wyatt's voice. Musically it's just a clatter, the worst kind of white-boy collegiate 'modern jazz' pretension.
A is like Curtis Mayfield on holiday, and that'll do here

First disappointing match in the finals. True that both can be labelled as 'interesting' but neither did much for me. Marginally

A is a bit of a Blaxsploitation classic and always good to hear. Great arrangement and has that big, expansive sound so typical of the era that I love. I always feel I should like Soft Machine. In theory they tick a lot of my boxes: jazzy- tick, psychedelic -tick, a bit of English eccentricity - tick. But I struggle with them, mainly because they have little in the way of tunes or groove and the playing is seldom interesting enough to compensate. This just sounds confused to me, with Wyatt singing a totally different song to what's being played.

This is a really fascinating match for me, and i like both songs to be honest. A is beautifully produced and full of snap and groove as you'd expect from a Hutch records of that time, but there is something really appealing about the more ramshackle spaced out groove of B too. It sounds both dated and modern at the same time, and i like that juxtaposition in a lot of my music. I guess i'll need to go with the one i feel like listening to more ... i think that's probably A. With apologies to B...

the hutch pick is the kind of earnest southern soul which has dominated this cup. urgh. this should have been a bye for B but they selected a proggish soft machine track.

A doesn't start off too well, I don't know if this is from a soundtrack or it's just a dull intro. Takes a while to get going, and when it does, it goes full on. A bit over the top with the strings and horn stabs, but I like that occasional driven drum bit, when the song relaxes a bit.
Soft Machine Vol 1 is pretty much all the Soft Machine you'll ever need. Personally, I reckon these songs are a good match, both throwing the kitchen sink at the song, just Soft Machine are doing it with a bit more invention. They've not completely left the pop sensibility behind here, though it's certainly buried under a pile of duffel jackets. Yeah, bring on the prog.

I’m realising that I’ll never dig Wyatt or SM and I’m perfectly fine with that. A is a Superbad belter, Weetabix would be delighted. Love that intro.

Fu*k vs prog? Be still my heart Human voices heard at 1.20. and at 1.50, a song breaks out. And I kind of wish the noodling was back. Not remotely funk, I'm glad to say, but not very inspiring , either. And what it is he's going to work out - earwax? Personally, I'd have been grateful if they had worked out how to start without two minutes of fuck all 3.5 / 10 I first heard this lot when I was living in Canterbury. Hawkmoth was a big fan, but I found them annoying. Still do, I'm afraid. I grew to like Wyatt's voice, but I can't really hear him here. And Ratledge and the others (is Ayers on this?) are twats. Middle class kids farting about. 2 / 10
A got lucky

A is okay and would probably win against most anything else, but I love 'As Long As he Lies Perfectly Still'. All of its parts are just fantastic, from the crashing piano chords and bass anchoring the whole thing to Wyatt's melodic phrasing that fits perfectly with the music, despite what G thinks. It's probably my favourite thing on Vol. 2.
