Neither of these are exactly setting my world on fire, though I liked A more than I expected to, and B less.

Flipper are one of those bands you'd see pop up in the cup semi-regularly years ago but I've never been fussed and B is meant to be one of their better songs.
A wasn't great but I liked the horn section.

B had enough in the first six seconds to blow away the beardy bore from Sarf Africa

Not really keen on either, but at least B stays a bit longer in the memory.

MM's Chapter Three is full of really original jazzy hybrids and this is a highlight. Deserves better than the damning it's getting. This is a driving track with propulsive drumming and some great horns. Nice one. B is probably the most ordinary track we've had in the final. Bog standard punk of the most prosaic and unmemorable kind. Good job for this lot they weren't around in London in 77. They wouldn't have even been also rans.
Easily A

Good match. I like some Flipper - they're like an aural scrubbing brush, in the best sense possible. But like G i don't understand why A seems to be getting so much withering snarl; it's got some great playing and energy, and an appealing mix of rock and jazzy sounds. gets my vote.

A is a long time favourite, the kind of PROG i can get behind. B is just a bit silly.

A I like Flipper and find they are the perfect punk antidote to something sh*tty like Crass, Sham 69, Rejects, Upstarts, etc., so - A or B?

That's the lamest psychedelic vocal I've heard for some time, whispering nothing in a high tone does bugger all for me, and I'm not sure that the kinda soul horns really fit in. The squealing sax is good, and the bassist is fighting the good fight, but it feels like a waste of a pick. Doesn't even feel like a song, just a random collision of some session musicians.
Christ, B, what's this shit? Talk about taking a fall, you literally had nothing to do, and you've picked something this rank? Is there some underlying point I'm missing? Not only is it fairly bad generic US punk, it's irritating on top of it.
A. I did not see that coming.

Crikey, so that’s Flipper? Nein danke. And that’s a fabulous chunky and groovy concoction on A, absolutely ace.
