I go into more detail about what I find unimpressive in the song below, but I seem to be in a minority with this one. it contains splendour, G. a woozy groove which really captures the zeitgeist. i'm surprised it's not right up your street.

It's a beautiful song, one of the very rare occasions Jagger attempts sincerity and gets it right. it's overwrought. He's usually overwrought in the slower songs, isn't he? 'Fool To Cry', etc. On this he sounds convincing. Give it time, A. It will grow on you. Seriously.

It's like the 70s equivalent of Oasis. There's a real perfunctory, going through the motions feel to it. No, i don't get that at all, G. I've listened to the Stones my whole life, all their albums up the the 80s, and this song and LP represent a proper peak for me. There's barely any vocal melody there at all, just Jagger doing his generic roots thing. It sounds as if he's making it up as he goes along. I find the guitar riff pretty unmemorable too.

There's no cathartic quality or light and shade to the thing at all. It's like looking at a painting that only uses shades of brown. But there really is; there is a coiled, wound up tiredness that belies an underlying muscularity to the music which starts bursting out in the choruses and in the last section. Its not like something from TSMR, all shine and dazzle. This is just as much about depth of feel and texture, a beast coming to life. A gloriously mad, angry yet unrepentant howl at the moon.
