They aren't going to back down over HK are they? Reports like this are shocking....

And, worst of all, they keep sending their students over just to piss off our venerable John Coan. Morrissey HATES 'em too but he's a silly old racist.
Anyone been recently? Anyone been years ago? What did you think? What was it like? Considering its power and influence its understandable that countries skirt round confronting them but is it time more of "the West" did something? Especially considering they'll be running the world in the next, ooom 20 years. I dunno what mind. Maybe air drop millions of Morrissey solo albums on 'em.
I remember meeting an Aussie traveller who'd been round the world and back again twice and he raved about China but I can't say I fancy it, for some of the reasons above.

More seriously, China is going to be the petri dish for the next tech revolution, namely the Surveillance one. They have the right population for it too - compliance through fear.
I just hope that the grip it has on manufacturing is slowly eased somehow.

I went for work in 2006, first to Hong Kong for a few days, and then up to Beijing and Chongqing with the British Council, I think I was there overall for about ten days.
I liked Hong Kong a great deal.
Beijing was fascinating in terms of the history of the place, and I did the usual tourist historical stuff - Tianenmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Old City where the foreign legations were at the time of the Boxer Rebellion etc. But generally I didn't really take to the place. Too big and the traffic is insane. I found the people a bit brusque and sometimes surly too.
And Chongqing just seemed like a gigantic, sprawling place with little to distinguish it. It was freezing, grubby and covered in smog and fog the whole time I was there too. Great food though, Sichuan is known for its very hot and spicy cuisine and I really enjoyed eating out there.
On the whole I much preferred Taiwan, which I visited a couple of times in '05 and '06, and which struck me as a really nice mix of the best bits of China and Japan, without some of the drawbacks of both.

And they are building a new Silk Road all over the globe and investing in Africa and So. America.
One of my main worries about China is trying to get them onboard for some global climate initiative if we get a new President in 2020. They need to be part of that or we're fucked.
I just heard a report where they have spies all over Silicon Valley stealing technology for the Chinese gov't.
I worked for a small tech company in telecommunications a few years ago and the owner's wife was my graphic designer. She was complaining about other companies stealing her husband's ideas and I responded by saying, "All your graphic design software is pirated."

Things with China could change quite dramatically with Biden and the eventual change in China's hierarchy.
