Cook is flailing around, trying to get a laugh, and it’s painful to watch in places.
Well there's no 'trying' about it, he does get laughs and lots of them. But as always with Cook, there's a melancholia and emotional rawness underlying it all too. He is an ageing comedian playing an ageing rock star and that's very much part of it. This isn't smooth humour, it's flying by the seat of your pants stuff.
