The San Francisco Chronicle has a movie reviewer I like a lot, Mick LaSalle. He's pretty forgiving, but there are two directors he absolutely hates: Guy Ritchie and M. Shyamalan.
His beginning of his review for a past Ritchie movie is one of my favorites ever. Here it is:
"Guy Ritchie is the worst screenwriter in the world, but, to be fair, he is not the worst director. He is only the worst director of the people who actually get to make movies. As we speak, there are human beings walking the Earth - perhaps as many as a half dozen of them - with less directorial talent, but they've been safely diverted into other activities."
This morning, his review of Shyamalan's newest movie came out and here's the intro:
"Making movies is a lot easier if you’re good at it. But if you’re terrible, it’s a genuine accomplishment. You have to compensate for what you lack in ability with lots of persuasive power, not only to get financing but to find actors actually willing to be in your stuff. And then, once the movie is made, you have to make it through entire interviews while keeping a straight face.
Thinking in this way, we can appreciate M. Night Shyamalan’s achievement in “Glass.” He comes right out of the gate as if laying down a marker: Worst movie of 2019! Boom! Try to top that! Another filmmaker might be worried that no one will remember come December. But no, when you make a movie this ghastly, you have to know it: Forgetting “Glass” would be like forgetting pain.
This year will mark the 20th anniversary of “The Sixth Sense,” a film that introduced Shyamalan to the masses, a borderline great film that, in the light of his movies ever since, seems almost biblically miraculous — or at the very least as mysterious as the building of the Pyramids."
Any favorite bad reviews of movies, albums, or anything?
