Not sure Espers and Xiu Xiu were ever "Next Big Thing" material. Espers seem now defunct but Xiu Xiu have released a surprising amount of material over the years
The Vines are now down to "A Vine" Franz Ferdinand are still plugging away, living off the success of those first two albums
Of Montreal have released a shit ton of music in relative indie obscurity
Arcade Fire are still busy trying to be an "Important" band and have a decent following
The Streets keep coming back, even though nobody asked them to...
Interpol should have been wiped out in a plane crash after the second album, freezing them in time and maintaining their reputation
Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Scissor Sisters and Camera Obscura are on semi hiatus after a decent runs
Dizzee Rascal The Go! Team Comets on Fire Dungen The Fiery Furnaces

I kinda know where all the bands are at, but I was just thinking last night that most/all of these bands were being promoted at the time as having bright futures. I know pop music is an ephemeral thing, but some of these folks don't seem to have made very much after their debuts, as evidenced by dayodead's comments. Just much sustain.

I think Arcade Fire are the only one on that list who are still kinda "big," or who at least still release albums that get a lot of attention.

It's not bad, but it doesn't really break any new ground from their original album. It's pretty much variations on the original theme. I know Comets on Fire are still going too.

Franz Ferdinand - still living off the first two albums Of Montreal - lost touch they still playing? Arcade Fire - still a good band although not what they once were, wouldn't be surprised if they come up with another good album.
Interpol - still great live their recent albums are good but not like the first two Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - like the new Karen O album and they also are still good live but not as shocking as the beginning
Xiu Xiu - I'm a fan of them and think they have put out a few good albums

Their 2010 (?) album did really well in the end-of-year polls and had a couple of decent songs on it
but basically they're just dabblers and charlatans, she'll be on to some wanky art project in NYC when the record company money runs out.

Arctic Monkeys are still a pretty big deal, at least in the UK. They're definitely the most famous of that lot, and they're probably still worth keeping an eye on.

That cunt from the Vines did his dash when he insulted the crowd at a radio station gig and they blacklisted their music. Which is good, because I fucking hate him and them. Australia's biggest bands from that era are absolutely shameless ripoff merchants.

What about The Datsuns. Aussie?
They did AC/DC better than AC/DC. Pretty good in my book.
