It's a great album. The title track and 'Glittering Prize' still thrill me to the bone. It is a brilliant album, one of the very best of the '80s.

So, one hit, one miss and one maybe, but on the whole I'll take all of the bands I listed at the beginning over them, although of course if I had been exposed to them in my late twenties and early thirties, as with the others, that might have been different. Hooray! I'll take this as a win!

The Hancock solo in "Hunter and The Hunted" is one of the most glorious musical moments I know. It lifts you to some higher place.

It all sounds like a cheesier version of The Danse Society, with a much more annoying vocalist. Some vaguely interesting moments, but a lot of it just makes my spine curdle.

Nothing like The Danse Society, who were a fifth rate Cure!

What a glorious noise they made on this album. Kerr's vocals are often jumbled in the mix, which isn't a bad thing; just another instrument adding emotive effect, much like Damo often did in Can.

I remember it coming out. It sounded so different and radical.."statues, parks and galleries", it evokes mid Europe wonderfully. And it has one of Forbes best basslines.

Yes but it's coming out of a Glasgow chippie, isn't it? There's no real class there at all, rub the glitter a bit and you get plastic.

There's also those explosive synth noises and sheer attack of the drums. The interesting question is why this didn't make an even greater impact at the time. I think they suffered the fate of genuine innovators, they were too ahead of their time.

I dont think they were under-rated. They fell off a cliff with the next album the fine balancing act they had on NGD fell to empty bombast and big gestures. They still had the odd great single though.
They were a great live band on the way up to NGD playing smaller venues, the move to arenas coincided with the bombastic cliches.

I've been listening to Sparkle In the Rain the last few days. It's fucking good.

Being in a John Hughes or Hollywood movie soundtrack seemed to be the kiss of death for many good groups - Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen.

This one was barely off my turntable back then (I had it on a 12" with Celebrate). I couldn't get enough of its tough, mechanical sound.
