It should go one way or the other though. The rail industry should either be owned and funded by the government, or it should be private without subsidies.

Yeah but without subsidies, there wouldn't be service on non-profit lines and times. I think transport is one of those essential things which should be available to people, and at a reasonable rate. For social *and* environmental reasons. (Yes I drive, but I do use trains - and if public transport is better/regular/cheaper then it would be used more.)

I'm with Ray on the lynching of Branson matter.
Train travel in Italy is wonderful - good service, reasonable prices *sigh*.

I've had to put in a claim for a refund for four of the last five train journeys I've taken, because they were either delayed or cancelled outright.
I'm on the Edinburgh to Carlisle train now, and it's absolutely crawling. And it was late leaving. I'm going to miss my connection. I'm really, really tired of the whole thing. You can't rely on trains in this country at all.

6.52 Edinburgh - Carlisle. I thought an early weekend train would be quiet. Not one bit.

Trains are always busy.
When we go up to London at half-term you'd think that the commuter rush would stop at 8.30 or so, but no - the rush hour in London now really seems to be 6-10 and then 3-9.
It reminds me of when I lived in Tokyo, having only really experienced London's rush hour, which back then seemed to be 7-9 and 4.30 - 6.30. Tokyo was from around 3 onwards in the afternoon until around 11. Leaving Shinjuku or Shibuya, you'd be shoved into the trains even late at night.
The reality is that Britain's travel infrastructure is heaving.

14.12 Edinburgh - Lancaster.
Direct, which surprised me. And I'm in FIRST CLASS

Lancaster's a lovely place, mind. Anyone been to Lancaster? Bit like York or Chester or Durham. Lovely place. Train back tomorrow
