but you just know that the americans will not get it! I guess not. I watched that "There There" promo, at least until I stopped laughing. What the everlovin' fuck was that? I say, you chaps would buy any old novelty back in the '80s.

And a good yelpy singer. I am not a fan of Dexy's first album, which I've stated before. However, I think it's something the UK music scene needed at the time and pretty important. I just don't think it's very good soul music, more a parody than homage. While I'm not a fan of the guy's music, I appreciate his vision and his commitment to the music and views he takes. This.

oh Charles! what a blind-spot! how can you not find that exciting? I mean, we're talking about views that are on the complete opposite ends of the spectrum. We think it's impossibly exciting, Charlie and sloop think it's total rubbish. Our musical tastes differ a fair bit but we tend to have ROUGHLY similar tastes. A headscratcher.

There, there is quite magnificent. I personally love his voice. I have said it before but Rowland and his search for something pure and precious , Bunnymen proclaiming Ocean Rain to be the greatest album ever made or Pete Wylie trying to save the world purely with heroic vocals....I mean, this is what I love. Passion ! Not cool or aloof (although they do have their place) Just bands believing in themselves.

The song’s fucking ace but good old Kevin’s not a great dancer.
I’ve always loved the line ‘the only way to change things is to shoot men who arrange things’

I say, you chaps would buy any old novelty back in the '80s. Nothing novelty about it. It's one of the greatest tracks of the era - impassioned, charged, powerful..few things come close. I will say more about the band over the next day or so. He/they deserve a full post.

My views are that it's a completely bastardized and mistaken homage to soul music. Was it original? Yes. Was it good? No.
I could go to 25 bars in the Bay Area on any weekend and see and hear better.
I'll give them the passion for the music. It seems genuine, but it's a totally misconstrued version of how soul music or R&B should sound.
I just think they really didn't have a feel for the real thing and weren't raised on it so they developed a jaundiced perception on what it's supposed to feel and sound like. We had a venue in my hometown, the Circle Star Theater, which booked an unbelievable amount of soul and R&B acts. It wasn't expensive and you could see the best of soul and R&B - I saw Earth, Wind and Fire and the Temptations there, among many.
For one thing, their approach too urgent. It's White Boy urgent, and gets ahead of itself, and never settles into a pocket or groove which is kind of a hallmark of soul music. Soul music is about seduction and not going up to a woman and asking, "Can I fuck you?" Soul music has "game," as the playas call it.
