I really enjoyed this piece that takes a crack at the question "why are so many Americans unvaccinated?" intellectualinting.substack.com/p/among-the-unvaccinatedI hadn't really thought about the broad strokes of this in quite the same way. he describes the same sort of ennui that I experienced growing up with Watergate. why trust anybody? This guy wrote a powerful book called "Dignity: seeking respect in back-row America". I think he is really interested in these people and their reasons. Interesting, but nothing I didn't expect to read. Were people this trustful of politicians and business during the Great Depression? Maybe. I should go back and see. I know unions made great strides during that time, which was a reaction to big business and government. Not taking a vaccine seems to take on a whole 'nother distrust. When did people start distrusting doctors? It kinda reminds me of the GOP's argument against socialised medicine. When was an insurance company your friend? Your doctor may be, but the insurance company certainly not. Take them out of the equation. But people are so used to the hell they know that anything different is evil. I was raking leaves and talking to my neighbor. She was telling me that she's worried about her granddaughter getting the vaccine. I asked her if she and her husband got it and she said they did and were getting the booter. She said it was different for them, and they took the chance on an experimental drug becaus of their age and how COVID affected their age group. I told her that the vaccine isn't really that experimental and was piggybacking off the SARS vaccine which has been in development since around 2003. You could tell that news threw her for a loop for some reason. I don't know, but the choices between possible death and protection against death from COVID seems a pretty easy decision to me. There's a lot of the Plato's cave allegory in these folks and reinforcing the hell they can see right in front of them vs. maybe learning something new.

I think the distrust of the media plays a role here. Anybody who follows the news knows how many problems they have. All the No-Vaxxers I know are as proud of rejecting the media as they are of rejecting the vaccine. so, I think things like the "Miss Bettie" story become like "Bloody Mary" or something from when I was a kid. the oral tradition lends itself to learning to repeat tales better than we heard them.
I liked the article because I know some people who have decided THIS is their issue.I know when I'm licked. I need to work my sympathy muscles.

There's a lot of the Plato's cave allegory in these folks and reinforcing the hell they can see right in front of them vs. maybe learning something new. I don't think it is simple distrust though, 'cause many anti-vaxxers, Trumpers, really don't want any change. They don't make any allowances for change, flexibility. They usually have a simple view of things and don't want to veer from it. I get that we get overwhelmed with information, change has happened quickly, things that were thought to be true aren't/weren't. They are holding a line on their personal Idaho, whatever it might be, and that's that, anything else presented is hersey, sacrilege, conspiracy, etc., Unfortunately, only the generational turning that comes with aging out, dying off will ease the tension.

I think it's interesting, in this article & his book, how he is mostly engaging with Boomers.

Boomers and early Xers are where most of the mistrust, intransigence seems to be with these issues, the Trump base.

Do You Remember? Once upon a time, a little over a year ago, in this land and all lands across the earth, people could walk freely, smiles visible, into businesses of their own choosing, and those businesses could open or close as they like. Do you remember that? When families could visit family members, when friends could visit friends. When people could hold weddings and funerals and birthday parties. When grandparents could hug grandchildren. When kids could go to school, play together, and sleep over at friends’ houses. When people who got sick stayed home until they were better, and the rest of the world went about its business. When people could encircle their dying loved ones. When mothers could hold their babies after they were born without the threat of separation pending arbitrary test results. When every death wasn’t attributed to a single cause and announced in the daily death toll dispatches. When a perpetual storm cloud of fear, paranoia, and tension didn’t hang over us, threatening to burst any moment. When people could travel freely, without having to show their papers. When people didn’t think twice about dining out, meeting for coffee, singing, exercising, and dancing. When you didn’t have to arrange for curbside pickup, schedule appointments for everyday errands, and have someone else select and deliver your groceries. When money wasn’t printed in the trillions, falling out of the sky and turning to toilet paper—which, as it turns out, would carry more value—on its descent. When people thought for themselves, decided for themselves, worked for themselves, took responsibility for themselves. When people weren’t deplatformed, shunned, reported, and unpersoned when they shared contrary opinions and scientific evidence. When this information wasn’t then scrubbed from the commons. When people didn’t turn against neighbors, friends, and family members. When it was considered rude to ask about someone’s health status and medical choices. When people helped people, cared for people, and touched (yes, literally!) people. When people didn’t let politics or religion come between them—okay, that one was more than a year ago. But you remember the rest, don’t you? You remember what it felt like? And you know it doesn’t feel that way now. At all. At all. At all. Oh, how quickly the conditioning takes effect. Oh, how quickly the freedoms flit away with nary a second glance. Oh, how quickly the world becomes an internment camp—its invisible walls constructed by our collective learned helplessness—with rules about when, where, and what you can do, and we all line up for our allotted portions, saying please and thank you all the way. I remember when. What do you remember? margaretannaalice.substack.com/p/do-you-remember-podcast?token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjozNzI1ODE3MSwicG9zdF9pZCI6NDQzMTM5NDgsIl8iOiJqN2NNdCIsImlhdCI6MTYzNzM5MDc1MCwiZXhwIjoxNjM3Mzk0MzUwLCJpc3MiOiJwdWItMzQ3MTE0Iiwic3ViIjoicG9zdC1yZWFjdGlvbiJ9.vyGSpfzp8Fp02ZYzFlmFXzisBE83wZNCWEDsfsmUv-wOh yes, it'd be definitely better not to have a pandemic running around.

"the Trump base." Whom, by the way, are arguably a majority of American voters, which, in a democracy, is supposed to mean something. Trump didn't win the popular vote in either of his elections, thus not in the majority, but yes, everyone's vote means something.
