Don't you think that"s a bit alarmist? It pisses me off a bit when people do it because it just causes shortages and makes things worse. I don't know. Is it wrong to be prepared for any eventuality? I have a family to consider. I also live in the countryside where access to things is not the same as in an urban area. The rate at which things are progressing isn't great if I'm honest. Part of me thinks people are being alarmist - and that it is just a more virulent strain of flu. But the fact that the Doctor at the heart of the outbreak in China died, who was about 34, makes me think twice about it. It would be interesting to know just how many people die from "Flu" each year - I think the death rate is about 1.5. Covid-19 is 2.5. Toby you're in Tunbridge Wells not the Outer Hebrides. Of course it's a worry, but people panic buying won't help anyone.

The US response yesterday wasnt great either. Tell me about it! I got locked out of Twitter for 12 hours for saying that I hoped Trump and his followers died from it!

One of my brothers flies for Cathay Pacific and they've been hit hard. Their load and capacities have been smashed. He's taking a month's unpaid leave.

I'm a bit bored at the panic around this. It's just one more thing that everyone is whinging about, or using as an example of how the world is terrible, or Trump is terrible.
I was speaking to another medical colleague about the mechanism of action of the virus and how it tends to spare children and more adversly affect the elderly, or those with hypertension. I guess it's scary because it's a different strain to any we've encountered before, and therefore it may be less easily contained. But people DO go too far. If you were in an endemic area, I could see this as more of a concern. But for all the people who live out of contact with those people, what are you going to do? Do you sit around wondering about rare diseases you're very unlikely to contract, but YOU NEVER KNOW? One could sit around worrying about getting cancer or any other illness. But you don't.
Wearing a mask is stupid, and ultimately, people should just wash their hands, keep a good level of hygeine. Industry and bigger groups should be sensible and limit spread by avoiding big international meetings etc. People should be safe, and sensible. And after that, it's out of your hands.
Maybe we should be reminded that life is fragile every so often... but global, generalised panic is just not very rational and helps nobody.

I think of pandemics the way I do zombie invasions. Unless they're knocking at my back door, I don't really think about them.
What concerns me is how China treated it, shunning the ophthamologist who brought it to their attention and our President, who gives conflicting info in contrast to his medical experts and says it will "disappear one day."

I mean, it likely will disappear one day. We all will. Politics is concerning for it's persistent lack of transparency, but I suppose I come from South Africa where they've been lying about HIV and TB related deaths for decades. I'm not suprised. I suppose I hope that the people who need to know the information have ways of getting at it. Does the public need to know everything, maybe yes, maybe no. But just judging from otherwise reasonable people's reactions, they may not be able to handle it.

The striking thing about TRUMP’s comments was that they bore no relation to those of the assembled experts. Panic is bad but info is good. The experts advocated for awareness and preparedness.TRUMP threw a rhetorical bone to the same people who want to say “merry christmas” instead of “happy holidays” His cult doesn’t trust government to do diddly squat. I think it’s a good idea to keep an eye on who cashes the checks when the vaccine finally shows up.

Well, fuck that shit!

Do you think he's suffering from something? Seriously?
It's going to lose him some votes. But enough?

He could have dementia or something. OR he could be a huge asshole that fills stadiums with people who love him because he’s a huge asshole. I think it could go either way.
